Total Commander cannot read VMWare shared folders

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Total Commander cannot read VMWare shared folders

Post by *Frede »

I don't know if you are fimiliar with VMWare Workstation. It is a virtual machine software that allows you to run a virtual machine with an OS on your desktop. With a virtual machine you can create a shared folder on the host so you connect to a share on the host without connecting to the domain (it's not a network share but a special share in VMWare). This works fine on most OS but not if the virtual machine is a Windows Server 2008 x64 system. In that case the shared folder does not show in Total Commander although it is visible in the Windows Explorer. I have created a screen shot that shows the problem. You can download it from

This is a joke. I HAVE been a member for more than 3 days. I HAVE posted a valid message but I still am not allowed to write a freakin URL. How am I supposed to write bug reports with screenshots?

I have now successfully added the url to the post above

The URL is now in my profiles web site address.
I recommend that you make it easier for people to submit bug reports.

Hi, Frede.

Please, be assured that we all had to suffer from the 3-days plus 3-posts borderline in the beginning. By now you should have successfully crossed it.
So you might edit your initial message and add the missing URL right away.
I recommend that you make it easier for people to submit bug reports.
There have been lengthy discussions on how to keep (human and automatic) spambots away from this forum without annoying new forum users too much. If you feel like doing so, use the forum search function in order to re-read all the pros and cons on any approach which was suggested.

Regards,
Karl

I can live with it. I have only discovered 2 bugs in TC over the years so it is not criticial. But I have never seen a forum before that has this kind of rules for posting. How is this forum different?

I assume that Vmware isn't offering access to ".host" to 32-bit apps. Can you see it in 32-bit Explorer.exe?

Anyway, can't you map a drive to a shared folder like you could in older versions of Vmware?

Right!

Post by *Frede »

You are right, the .host is not visible in the 32-bit explorer wither so it isn't available for 32-bit apps.

Of course I can map a drive but in that case I must log on to the network each time. Using .hosts bypasses this and I can still access the files on my host system. Anyway this isn't a TC issue but a Win32 vs x64 issue.

Maybe a 64-bit TC is out soon? 8-)

It's a great tool anyway.

Sorry, in this case I can't help you. Please complain to Vmware about the bug. They simply need to install both the 64-bit AND 32-bit extension on 64-bit systems. Not only TC will benefit from that, also most other programs are available in 32-bit versions only.
