Recent problems displaying pdf files in Quick View Panel

Post by *Derek Cornish »

I use the excellent IEView plugin for displaying pdf files in the Quick View Panel of TC 7.04a. Recently I upgraded from XP Pro SP2 to SP3 and took the opportunity to upgrade from IE6 to IE7 (I was tempted by IE8 beta, but resisted).

Soon afterwards, two problems developed: first, I noticed that my pdf files would no longer display in the Ctrl+Q window, but only in a separate Acrobat Reader (AR) window; second, at the same time that the AR window opened, a lister window opened behind it, displaying the message that "Navigation to the webpage was canceled. What you can try: Retype the address."

It looked as though what was happening was that TC - via plugin IEView, I suppose - was trying to d/l the original of the file in question at the same time as it was displaying the locally stored copy.

I tried a number of fixes:
- selecting the AR option to "display PDF in browser";
- blocking TC from using the internet via ZoneAlarm;
- using an alternative plugin (ActivePDFView).

None of these worked (in fact ActivePDFView doesn't work at all in my setup, either using IE6 or IE7).

Rather than engage in further fruitless googling and tinkering, I "solved" the problem by uninstalling IE7. This automatically reinstalls IE6.

Has anyone else had these problems? If so, have they found more sophisticated (i.e, less drastic) ways of sorting them out?

ActivePDFView doesn't work at all in my setup
Note: If ActivePDFView is installed AFTER IEView, then IEView will catch the PDF listing task first =>no display !

You may disable IEview temporarily or put it at the end of the plugin list.

Can you see pdf files on IExplorer window (Acrobat Reader ActiveX)?
I have used IE7/IEview and AcrobatReader/Acrobat/FoxitReader without any problems on XP sp2/3 and Vista sp1.

Thanks, sqa_wizard,
But ActivePDFView doesn't work for in me with either IE6 or IE7, even when I uninstall ieview completely. I've noticed that some others have reported problems getting ActivePDFView working, too. As ieview is now working for me, I haven't investigated further :-).

Thanks for letting me know it has been working ok on your setup. I had no problem displaying pdf files in IE7 itself. It was only when I tried to do so using TC that the problems I mentioned above occurred. Reverting to IE6 was the only way I was able to solve them.

Well, it looks as though I am in a minority. I don't mind dumping IE7, though, as I mainly use Firefox and Maxthon, which works fine with IE6. I am just relieved to be able to get rid of that extra lister window with the error message, and to be able to use the quick view panel for browsing through files again.
