Some time, Karl, but not just yet. :)

Then Chinese will fail, Russian will rise, to be challenged by Portugese. But not just yet.

Note that I didn't say that English is the most-spoken language in the world; just that it's the world's common language.

So, to reiterate: I suggest we make the forum helpful by auto-restricting search results to English, on the English pages.

Considering the fact that native Chinese speakers are by far more numerous than native English speakers, we might come to the conclusion that the main forum language should be changed to Chinese sooner or later
Fair enough. :) Also - according to this: http://www.photius.com/rankings/languages2.html there is a fair amount of Spanish speaking people in the world (plus a considerable amount that speak Spanish as second or third language).

Hi, PeterTBCarp2.

Well. I see your point:

Whenever I do a search inside the Kaspersky user forum, I wish there were a simple way of searching the English forum only, because often I get a number of Russian threads in the list. Yet, I do not understand Russian.

Here in the T.C. forum, the situation is different for me. Whenever I do a search, I get threads in English or German in 95% of all cases. Sometimes French threads will appear as well. - This is fine for me, because I do speak English a bit and German almost fluently and if I try hard my French may be sufficient to understand French posts as well.

Essence:

It really depends on the personal point of view and on the personal needs whether someone may support the idea to restrict the forum search to one language at a time.
Inside the Kaspersky forum, this would be helpful to me. Inside the T.C. forum this would not be helpful to me at all.

I wonder if your request might be a candidate for a forum poll ...

Regards,
Karl

I seldom use the search function, so I don't mind that much.

Here, kids get educated with 3 foreign languages, English, French and German.
But regarding computers and forums, it has nothing to do with some country hegemony.

The English on the Inet has mutilated as well, from the one of native speaking countries UK or US, it's a language on its own,
with its own development.

This common factor is also caused by technical properties.
Even Chinese websites have a HTML source in English, afaik.
If I talk with a friend about some snapshot, I use the native word 'foto'. If I talk about a picture on my screen, I use the word 'bitmap'.

English in English

Post by *PeterTBCarp2 »

Well, where are we now..?

I'm suggesting that the bulk of English speakers in the world, especially in the realm of internet users, don't speak German and French as well.

So would it be too great a leap to help those English speakers by restricting results to those written in English? (This isn't a big ask, it seems to me. Discriminating by language to language.) Hell, these are computers: make it settable in Profile.

As for a forum poll - it's a bit like pirated software: flawed logic: Would all those who use pirated software have bought the product if it hadn't been available piratedly? Similarly, a poll here is addressed by only those who visit the site, those who DO like the way it works or those who are prepared to tolerate it. Those who the forum has driven away wouldn't, of course, vote. :o

Is it really so complicated for you to use the already existing filter mechanism implemented in the search?:

1.
Forum: Total Commander (English)
Category: All available

1b.
Forum: Plugins and addons: devel.+support (English)
Category: All available

1c.
Forum: Total Commander Polls (English)
Category: All available

2.
Forum: All available
Category: Total Commander 7 bugs and suggestions

Instead of suggestions like "search only for english language forum" (and a lengthy discussion about main languages), a better suggestion, not excluding multilingual users, would be to modify the forum software in a way that only selected forums should be searched:

Code: Select all

[ ] Spam trap (do not post here!)
[x] Total Commander (Deutsch)
[x] Total Commander (English)
[x] Total Commander (Français)
...

Kind regards,
Holger
