Is Help To Be Revamped In TC 7.5?

Post by *PeterTBCarp2 »

Some time ago spikey asked for "command navigation" info in each Help page in the standard Help.chm (F1) file.
http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=10583&start=30

Although it wasn't obvious for three pages to the regulars what was being requested it received much support in the end. :)

I'm wondering if Help is going to get a make-over for TC Vn 7.5 - from its Windows 3.0-style appearance and behaviour - with such things as "command navigation" in it. That's just one element.

["Command Navigation" is just having 'bread-crumbs' at the top of each Help page saying where the feature is in the program itself.]

As for Help itself - anything big planned? I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that it's looking extremely haggard. Is there a sub-committee working on it, perhaps..? Applications open?

Sorry, nothing big planned so far. The problem is that CHM files do not work on Windows 95 original version, and as long as I support all 32-bit Windows versions, I cannot switch to CHM.

Does this mean 'non-readable' at all, or just not as a default ?

This Vista is really funny. I press in TC F1 and I am getting regular help as it is supposed to be. But... I am navigating into TC home dir and trying to "run" TOTALCMD.HLP just by pressing ENTER on it and I am getting what Lefteous mentioned:
The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which was used in previous versions of Windows and it is not supported in Windows Vista.

For more information, see Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) is no longer included with Windows on the Microsoft support website.
...soooo, not supported, but it works

You have to install an additional package to be able to display hlp files on Vista - just like installing the Internet Explorer version which adds chm suppport on Windows 95.

Actually it IS supported on Vista 32bit by default, just not on Vista64, which is used only by a tiny fraction of Vista users. The problem is that Vista64 doesn't run 16-bit programs, and TC uses winhelp.exe on Vista32 when winhlp32.exe is missing.

Yes I actually referred to Windows Vista 64 bit. I guess more people are using Windows Vista 64 bit than Windows 95. Windows 95 is no longer supported by Microsoft.
Although our last poll represents only a fraction of the users it shows that Windows 9x is dying. At last.
