Where Do Files for Extended Menus Go?

Post by *Keith Waxman »

I would like to use the Extended English Menus for Total Commander 7.04a by petermad, but am unsure where all the different files (.mnu, .inc, etc.) are to be installed and how to adjust wincmd.ini to get the files called when starting TC.

Hi, Keith.

An extended menu is a menu after all. So put the files in the same folder as the other menu files, i.e. %COMMANDER_PATH%\language.

Then use Configuration => Options => Language => item Menu File and select the extended menu file.

They all go into the Language folder under your Total Commander program folder .

If you just double click on the downloaded zip file, then the files should be installed in that folder automatically - and the menu is automatically chosen.

Otherwise you can open the menu via "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Language" - where you chose: "English with extended menu 1/2 [by petermad]" in the "Change the language" box.

If you choose to use the Extended Menu's option: "Help" -> "Install Addons for Total Commander" the following files are additionally installed in your Total Commander program folder (the one with totalcmd.exe in it):

wciconex.dll
wciconex.inc
lister.exe
lister.exe.manifest
descript.ion
desktop.ini

Furthermore this file is installed in the Language folder mentioned before:

wcmd_eng.chm

The only already existing file that will be overwritten is descript.ion - and only if you agree to do so.

In the file wcmd_ext_eng.txt (which is placed in the Language folder during installation) you can see a description of all installed files - it can also be seen here: http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=105285#105285

If you have installed the Addons, and find that you don't like the HTML Help file, but will prefer the old style Help - then you can just delete the wcmd_eng.chm file and restart Total Commander. You can alternatively open the old style Help file via "Help" -> "Old Style Help" (if you don't use Windows Vista or have installed Winhelp32.exe)

I have the same problems about installing. I am new here, but not to NC and TC. I am danish and have just been downloading the eng. zip-files from the homepage of PeterMad and have written him several emails about more information about how to install.

I have read wcmd_ext_eng.txt and descript.ion (filename: I would suggest description.txt)

PeterMad writes: "you just double click on the downloaded zip file, then the files should be installed in that folder automatically". No, when I double click the tc704_en.zip in Windows Explorer, it just opens in Explorer window, nothing else.

I have just installed TC ver. 7.04a and I have NO menu called Help. What is new to me: the files go into the folder ../totalcmd/language folder, nice to know! I will now try to copy the files here and see, what happens!

I found out after reading a post from Ghisler.

Re-open TC, navigate to the downloaded zip, example: tc704_en.zip from PeterMad. Hit Enter on the file!! and follow instructions. Files will be copied and now you go Menu Start -> Change Main Menu and you see the new menus, that you can select.

I have just answered you by email.

No, when I double click the tc704_en.zip in Windows Explorer
Of course you have to do it in TC not in Explorer - Explorer knows nothing about TC!

In case anybody insists on manually installing, here is where the files (English version 7.04a) has to go, assuming TC is installed in c:\Totalcmd:

I have just installed TC ver. 7.04a and I have NO menu called Help.
It is placed in the upper RIGHT corner of the menu - see: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/help.png

descript.ion (filename: I would suggest description.txt)
descript.ion is the official filename for files containing descriptions of the files in a folder (alternatively files.bbs)

TC reads the descriptions from this file and uses them for example in the file lists if you press Ctrl+Shift+F2

Hi Peter
Yes, thanks for the emails. I wonder how many users have noticed the Help menu in the upper right corner - very unusual.

btw: There is no "of course" in communication between humans. We are all different and have differenct interpretations of words. So you have to be specific. I hope, that this clarifies something for other users ;-)
