Annoying message: A directory with the name x already exists

Post by *samot »

I click F5 to copy a file and enter the destination directory (f.e. c:\temp) without a closing backslash manual.

Since the 7.50 beta I get now the following message:

A directory with the name
c:\temp
already exists do you want to copy the file/dir to this subdirectory?

I see no reason, why TC ask me that (by default), particularly because it is much more common to copy a file to an existing directory as to copy and rename it to somewhere, where accidentally exists a subdirectory with exact the same name.

Ok, if I would add a backslash to the destination, the message would no longer appear, but each key stroke too much counts

Please remove this message again or make it configurable (and / or tell me how to disable).

best regards

Thomas

Was already reported here and here (german).

Perhaps C. Ghisler should consider to make this behavior configurable.

... and here.
It would be really good to be able to switch it off (via ini)

It's not a bug! This was requested many time both here in the forum and also by e-mail. The problem is that people tried to copy or rename a file to a new name, and it simply disappeared from the list because it was moved to the subdir!

You can append a backslash to make it clear that you really want to move the file.

Since many users have a problem with that then how about adding "Help" button to this message dialogue which will take the user to proper page with explanation?

it might help a bit to avoid repeating same posts all over again ;)

So now many users will be sending posts like this above asking for changing it back :-)

Of course we will be adding the additional backslash or pressing ENTER twice but it's not easy to get accustomed to it if you've used to do in another way for many years.

Maybe I could add a checkbox "don't show this message any more" as in the Unicode warning of TC 7.0x?

Yes yes yes, pleeeeeease :-)

It's true that you can append a "" at the end, but if I move a lot of files into subdirs it's often easier to do for example F5, "1", Enter instead of F5, "1", "", Enter (to move some files into a subdir called "1"), especially since the \ on german keyboards needs a modifier key (altgr).

Not to mention that I keep forgetting the \ every second time :)

Thanks

19.05.09 Added: F5 copy: When copying in the foreground and a target dir with same name as the current file exists, show a checkbox to set the option CopyToDirWarn=0
19.05.09 Added: F5 copy: Allow to turn off warning which is shown when the user enters by hand a dir name which already exists: wincmd.ini [Configuration] CopyToDirWarn=0
Thanks Christian :)

The problem still exists with F6 instead of F5. See my post in this (german) thread: http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=173783

Please consider adding the same "don't ask again" checkbox there too.

Thanks

Confirmed!
No confirmation/warning dialog with this setting.
Silently moved into existing directory.
