Release new bugfix version of Total Commander 7?

Post by *Lefteous »

The last version of Total Commander (7.02a) has been released 4 months ago. Since then a couple of bugs have been found. What do you prefer?

1) A new bugfix of TC 7 version should be released as soon as possible.
2) A bugfix version of TC 7 should be released before TC 7.5 final but not at such a high priority.
3) A bugfix version of TC 7 should be released after TC 7.5 final.
4) Don't release a new bugfix version of TC 7. Include all fixes in TC 7.5 final.
5) Bugs? What bugs?

Vote for 2). Why not to release a 7.03.

Vote for 4).
But in my opinion it depends on the state of fixed bugs.
If there are critical bugs (may cause data loss, or similar critical), then i would vote for 1).
Let Ghisler spend his time on implementation, not on creating releases for uncritical issues.

Vote for 2).
Because I find ASAP of 1) much too strong. And, as Alextp states, there is numerical room.

Along the way to 7.5 the todo-list of bugs will grow. If this list gets too big, it's possible that
it will take more time to realize the 7.5 final, because of the different fields of subroutines involved.
So decreasing the list by releasing some bugfixes could be more efficient in the process.

:) Hello Sam !

• “2” for me also, I agree with your reasoning.
- Moreover - beyond the “quantity” point- on one hand, the fact to switch to Unicode
keeping some (known) non-fixed bugs could lead to annoying downside effects when alpha¦beta testing the 7.5.
- On the other hand (back to “quantity”), already fixed bugs could free some time to add and test
a few improvements for current features (I've examples, but there, maybe am I a bit too optimistic ? ).

I'm not aware of any critical bugs which would require an immediate release of a 7.03 version, e.g. bugs causing data loss or posing a security problem. Are there any I missed? If yes, please point me to them.

A new 7.0x release would delay TC 7.5 by at least 1-2 months, that's how long it takes to backport bug fixes and test them thoroughly in a private beta test.

Hello, Postkutscher and alexey65536.

Any particular reason for reviving this dead old thread? It was about the question whether a bugfix for T.C. 7.02a should be released prior to T.C. 7.50 or not.
By now, 1.5 years later, we have had T.C. 7.03, T.C. 7.04 and T.C. 7.04a. So this poll has been superseded by the facts. - Case closed.

Kind regards,
Karl

Yes. TC7.0x steal noticeable faster then TC7.5x on old machines and I would like to have it for using with Win9x, where unicode is quite to not useful. I cannot say how many minor bugfixes have 7.5 compared to 7.04a , but I think enougth for one minor release in old brunch. Maybe some features of 7.5 could also be backported...

Actually TC 7.5 should start more quickly also on older machines because it uses an optimized reading method for its settings files. The change from packed to unpacked version may have some impact on loading speed, but only if you do NOT use a virus scanner. I will offer a packed version of TC7.5 final.

I do plan to bring out an updated version of 7.04 too, but I haven't decided yet which fixes need to be backported. Are there any which you absolutely need?

This one http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=20697 is really annoing, other are more minor, but I would be very glad if a feature for unraring archives with encrypted names will be backported ( fhRar really must die now :) ).

In addition more minor things, but could be also taken into account:
http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=17917&start=15
http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=18094
http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=22854&highlight=ascii and http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=19016 (seems to be related one to another)
