Can you suggest plugins for viewing *.DOC, *.DOCX, *.PDF ?

Post by *d~l »

Can I have some suggestions of plugins to preview *.DOC *.DOCX and *.PDF files in the Quick View Panel?

When opening a *.DOC file containing an embedded image I get this message although I can read the text. I'm not sure which plugin is invoked (see list of plugins I'm trying out). How do I know which plugin is in use for preview if I'm trying out different converters?

Microsoft Word 97 Conversion

Unable to convert graphic. Continue with document conversion?

I have ghostscript 8 installed.

Q1. Which plugin is recommended for previewing Word 97 and 2007 documents?

Q2. Can WordArcTC preview *.DOC and *.DOCX files?

Q3. Can the previwed text in Quick View Panel be word wrapped?

Q4. Why is only the first page in *.PDF docs previewed?

Here is a log of my current set of plugins:

I can preview *.DOC (without embedded images), *.DOCX, and *.PDF with the plugins below:

For previewing PDFs by F3, I am using muPDF, which is a tiny free standalone application and lightning fast (does not need GhostScript; older versions of muPDF are even smaller and work well too). I have copied its .exe to my TC folder and associated it with F3 in wincmd.ini. IMHO it works better than any of the Lister plugins but I do not know how to use it for displaying on the Quick View panel.

[EDIT: muPDF does not allow searching, though. As muPDF seems to be GNU GPL, it may prove to be an option for writing a standalone lister plugin for viewing PDF on the basis of muPDF.]

As for WLX plugins for PDF, there seem to be several.

(a) ActivePDFView requires an installation of Acrobat (Reader).

(b) GSWLX needs GhostScript.

(c) PDFView.wlx also requires GhostScript.

There is also the PDF Filter (former MultiLister) plugin, which I do not know much about. And there may be more.

muPDF

Post by *d~l »

Thanks for the muPDF tip .. I've installed it and it works fine with F3.

But I can't get any PDF viewers (including muPDF) to page through multiple pages in a PDF file. Is that possible?

[Edit: o.k. I've found that page up / page down navigates through multiple PDF pages].

You can see all muPDF shortcuts in 'About' (the top-left corner menu under the logo). (And for a portable installation, muPDF can be repacked by UPX to about half the size, in my case from 1.8 MB to less than 1MB.)

Well I have tried all pdfs and office plugins, no one work for me.

I prefer HTMLView: pdf(need foxitreader IE plugin), office docs(need office on your system), djvu(need lizardtech djvu plugin), etc

I am using an older version (sized 1,804,192 B and dated 3 Sep 2008). Since it is GNU GPL, I think I can upload this earlier smaller version somewhere if anyone is interested.

Can be downloaded 10 times. For TC/F3, you will need only pdfview.exe -- and if you UPX-pack it for portables, the file will be under 1MB.

In order to be able to run most of the PDF viewer plugins available for TC I had once installed Ghostschript. Unfortunately, this had somehow stopped my Acrobat Distiller from working properly. Therefore I ended up unstalling Ghostscript and the PDF viewer plugins. After re-installing my Acrobat Distiller at least this one could be restored but from now on I am absolutely reluctant to install anything that needs Ghostscript.

Lacking a working PDF viewer plugin I simply double click PDF files. I did, however, substantially improve the Acrobat Reader start-up speed by running ADOBE READER SPEED-UP V1.21

Author: Joseph Cox
Website: http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk
Forum: http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/forum
Released: 28th April, 2004

Quote from the ReadMe file: "Adobe Reader Speed-Up (ARSU) was created in an effort to automate the process of speeding up Adobe Reader's launch time by disabling the majority of plugins that are, quite frankly, completely useless for most users."

This Adobe Reader Speed-Up version may well be out of date but it works fine for me - and I never change a running system.

If someone comes up with an uncomplicated stand-alone PDF viewer plugin for TC which does not require installing any additional dubious software packages with all kinds of side effects I will definitely be among the first users!

I find also another pdf viewer that is based on muPdf renderer and have a little more UI. Also it is portable and is lage only 1,16MB (it is upx packed). It is SumatraPDF.

Thanks for the tip with mupdf.

But I have one more question, how can I associate mupdf with F3 in wincmd.ini?
I get it only with ALT+F3

thank you in advance

But I have one more question, how can I associate mupdf with F3 in wincmd.ini?
As muPDF can also show Adobe Illustrator, eps and ps files, I use the following lines (the first one is for PDF) in my wincmd.ini under the section [Extensions]:

Code: Select all

pdf=%COMMANDER_PATH%\wlx\muPDF\pdfview.exe ^.pdf
ai=%COMMANDER_PATH%\wlx\muPDF\pdfview.exe ^.ai
ps=%COMMANDER_PATH%\wlx\muPDF\pdfview.exe ^.ps
eps=%COMMANDER_PATH%\wlx\muPDF\pdfview.exe ^.eps
The path may need to be adjusted according to whether you put muPDF. (In my case it is c:\Program Files\WinCmd\wlx\muPDF\pdfview.exe)

If there are any other extension entries for ^.pdf in the same section of the INI file, you may need to remove them.
I find also another pdf viewer that is based on muPdf renderer and have a little more UI. Also it is portable and is lage only 1,16MB (it is upx packed). It is SumatraPDF.
I have also tried Sumatra. A nice piece of software but there was something in muPDF that I liked better. (I noticed that SumatraPDF tries to remember, in the dat file, every file it opens. This may be useful but also annoying.) By the way, a quote from the author of Sumatra:

"actually, sumatra has intelligent portable mode built in.
It only saves *.dat file in that location if it's run from Program Files directory, in which case it assumes it's been installed hence uses standard mode.

If Sumatra is run from any other directory, e.g. from a usb stick, it works in portable mode and creates *.dat file in the same directory where sumatrapdf.exe is."
