file rename never allows change of extension

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

file rename never allows change of extension

Post by *o_f_course »

It looks like the configuration setting >operation> 'select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)'
is always 'true'/selected

I can't change the extension of a file while renaming (shift-F6) a file.
I'm using TC 7.50a.

2o_f_course: Welcome to the forum !

Option 'select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)' selected, means to initially have the filename part only selected.

Option 'select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)' unselected, means to initially have the whole filename incl. extension selected.

Pressing F6 key again will toggle the selection.

Renaming the extension is quite rare. To do this, just press "End" key and "Backspace" accordingly.

As sqa_wizard said, with this option turned on TC selects just filename when you try to rename file. But if you uncheck option, TC will select whole name with extension (as old TC versions).
Even if you have 'select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)' option set, you may use keyboard or mouse to move cursor to file extension and to change it during file rename operation.
TC never hides extension in rename window in contrast to Windows Explorer.

Sorry to have bothered you guys, I can't reproduce the 'bug' anymore. The extension was hidden. I don't know if I should cry or be happy that I can't reproduce it.
Renaming the extension is 'needed' sometimes to force MultiEdit into the right color scheme.

Anyway, you may rename file using 2 ways:
1. Quick rename (Shift+F6).
2. Move file (F6, clear target path and type just filename, it will be just renamed).

You were probably in a virtual folder like the Desktop. Here it depends on Explorer settings whether the extension of a file is shown or not.
