Build in encrypted packer with encrypted file names

Post by *SignalSpirit1 »

Hi TC Team,

Actually the internal pack only supports encrypted zip files. Unfortunately zip dosn't support encrypted filenames => contend of the encrypted file is still visible.
It would be nice to have a internal packer, wich supports filename encryption (same pasword for filename- and fileencryption).

Actually I use the TotalSXQ Plugin (latest beta), but unfortunately the development on this plugin is stopped (I'm sorry because of that, because it is quite good. The only problem is, that you need 2 different passwords for filename- and fileencryption).

best regards

Why not to use 7Zip.wcx which provides best compression level and supports filenames encryption? I have this plugin installed always (but usually I'm using 7-Zip context menu since it can pack in background). But I would be glad to see in TC internal 7Z support through 7z.dll that is provided with 7-Zip archiver.

This is a security feature of SQX which will never change because SQX developement itself has been stopped. I couldn't change it even if I would continue developing the plugin.

I use the encrypted packer files as encryption for an USB-Stick, because programs like Truecrypt need adminrights on the host computer (or a installed driver) and I will never have adminrights on customer computers.
There are filemanager like programs like FreeOTFExplorer, but those programs are much less comfortable than the TC :wink: .

I would be happy, if there would be a TC internal solution, because this would guarantee that further versions of TC support the format two.

The 7zip Plugin looks good, but unlike TotalSQX it do not use the "encryption" checkbox. Maybe this will be implemented in the 1.0 Version.

@Lefteous
I suspected that. Nevertheless thank you for this great plugin. Why don't you realize the latest beta as final?

Lack of time. There are so many things to test. Users need to rely on data integrity to a degree. On the other hand it's of course seductive to have things like multithreading or Unicode support.
So what I'll probably do is to clean the source a bit and release it as unready version. Everything else seems unrealistic.
Anyway I can't even promise to find time to do this.

It's strange because this checkbox works for me in 0.6.4 and 0.7.2.1 versions. I've tried to create just encrypted archive and the one with encrypted names - and both was done as expected - the first opens but doesn't allow to read files w/o password and the second doesn't allow even to read archive contents w/o password.
