when copying files, tc stops and says filename over 256 char

Post by *myownemail32 »

it would be nice to have a feature that BEFORE the file copy, i could select what i would want to happen if tc encounters a file that is over 256 characters.

symptom: when i start a copy, i can select options for "file overwriting" or "skip files that can't be read" and i like that, but it stops the copy when it encounters filenames over 256 characters and asks everytime.

goal to start a copy, and pre-specify what i want to have happen when it encounters long filenames, instead of a dialog box which stops the copy. (i'm trying to avoid all prompts during a file copy operation)

when i copy huge directories, i leave for about 2 hours, only to come back to see that tc has ran for 30 seconds and popped up a dialog box saying "filename is longer than 256 characters" (still having Gibibytes and Gibibytes left to copy, and i have to keep pressing "skip" "skip" etc.

other programs have the ability to just continue on errors, skip long filenames, skip files that can't be read, etc...

i just want to preconfigure options before the copy, launch the copy, and come back 2 hours later with everything copied.

and by the way, not to toot anyone's horn, but tc is the BEST.

if this is in the program somewhere, and i'm just a goon... just let me know what to checkbox, or configure, and apologies if this has been covered before. thanks everybody

Currently you can only turn off the warning completely:

wincmd.ini
[Configuration]
LongNameCopy=1

From the help:

LongNameCopy=0
During file operations, warn if target name is longer 259 characters:
0=always
1=never
2=if source name isn't longer than 259 characters

i will edit the ini.

thanks again!

p.s. my CHM reading capability was messed up on my xp machine. i could see the tree, but when i expanded for content, nothing showed up on the right hand side... no wonder i couldn't find anything in the help!
