Windows exception

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Windows exception

TC 7.55a crashes just when I open it. When my mouse goes over any icon (file or menu) I get the following error.

Mind, this happens only on one PC :?
I've tried reinstalling it, used system restore, but no result.
I even copied an installed version from one PC the the other, but still no result.

The machine in question is a virtual PC ("Thin client"), I've used TC on it for about 8 months now.

Any ideas?

Used plugins:
- 7zip
- iso
- bz2
- office.wlx
- SynPlus.wlx

Thx

Thanks for your report. The error seems to be related to tooltip windows. You can turn them off in Configuration - Options - Display.

If the error goes away when you turn off just the Win32 style tipps, but leave the other enabled, then it's a problem with a shell extension. You can use ShellExView to fix this, just make a search here on the forum for the word ShellExView . Just sort by Extension type, then disable all the "InfoTip Handler" extensions which do NOT come from Microsoft.

Is it possible to do this directly in the ini-file. TC crash right after I open it.

So it is virtually impossible the go to the configuration menu before it crashes.

Thanks for the info, I'll lookup ShellExView

Hello, habell.

The tooltip settings which I have spotted in the Total Commander help file totalcmd.chm section 4.b wincmd.ini  are:
+ FileTipWindows=0
+ OleComments=3
+ Tips=0
+ Win32TipWindows=0
Yet, I am not sure whether these are all relevant settings, because it looks a bit as if for historical reasons the tooltip related parameters do not follow a consistent naming scheme.

So go ahead, put those lines in your wincmd.ini, section [Configuration]. Make sure none of the parameters gets defined twice, because the first definition wins. Launch T.C. and see if it helps.

Have you tried to launch T.C. using a really fresh wincmd.ini?
<path_to>\totalcmd.exe /n /i=.\really_new_wincmd.ini
Kind regards,
Karl

I've tried a fresh install even. No luck.

I had to disable all help related tooltips to stop TC from crasing. When disabling the win32 style tooltip only TC still crashed.
So I turned them all off.

Is this an error in TC or one of many bugs in Windows :(

Problem is solved now though.

Thanks.

EDIT:
It looks like I've found the real problem. I'm using windows XP with Cleanlooks style. It seems that this causes the tooltip handler to crash and as a result crashes TC. I'll test if TC still crashes when I'm using the default XP style.

Thanks for your feedback! Where can I find this Cleanlooks style? Maybe there is a way to avoid the crash...

It's a default Windows style. The "Classic" look

No crashes here with classic look, I have just tested it. There must be something else interfering, otherwise I would get many complaints...

It seems related to a program called "Leostream" which interferes with the default pop-up function of windows.
Other programs manifested this problem too. But since I use TC all the time, I noticed the problem with TC first.

The problem is solved now. Some setting about "windows feel" within the program of Leostream was the culprit.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Hi,

TotalCommander runs without any crashes. Till now!
No changes made to TotalCommander.

When i move with the mouse over a item in the listview
then Tooltipp comes up and TotalCommander crashes.
I can reproduce it.

By switching off the Tooltip, no crashes.

- Windows 7 x64 with All recent updates

cheers,

Try turning off just the comments from Explorer (OLE2) in Configuration - Options - Display. You probably have a defective/faulty shell extension which causes the crash.
