The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

I believe that what you are suggesting is not correct course of action. It is a bit optimistic from you think that users will go modifying registry on a whim... Especially now when registry became more then complex.

As it is on horizon, I will wait for x64 TC version for this feature.

You are free to do what you want, but my suggestion gives you at least a fix until the release...
