Copy file to media server very slow

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Copy file to media server very slow

Post by *jbegood »

Commander version 7.55a.
Operation system Win7-64 Ultimate
Router GBE (WAG320N), Ethernetcard GBE (Atheros 8121), Mediaserver 10/100 (AC Ryan PlanyonHD).
When copying a large file from 2Gb or bigger from my pc to the media server over the lan, it start quick, but the speed gets lower and lower and after 1/2 hour is in the end <300 kb/s. It takes than 1,5 to 2 days for a 10Gb file to get the file on the server. When I change in the configuration, the compressed before sending, makes no change, but when put it on passive mode an improvement is seen, to around 3Mb/s. But copying with Win explorer shows me a speed of 5Mb/s. This problem was with version 7.01 but also with 7.55a.
For my feeling there is a buffer what's running over, because it starts quick and gets slower and slower.

Passive mode? Do you copy by FTP? If yes, try using a larger ftp upload block size:

Please add the following string to the file wcx_ftp.ini, section [General]:
UploadBlockSize=32768

You can edit the wcx_ftp.ini via menu Configuration - Change settings files directly.

Larger block sizes than 32768 will probably NOT work.

Thanks for answering me. No I do not use FTP, just normal copy (F5).
I changed the uploadblocksize to 32768 but no difference. But as your question mark already suggests. I think probebly wrong, with passive mode. Since this is ftp.
Do you have any suggestions for slow copy speed.
It starts quick and is going slower and slower in the end <300kb. With explorer 5 Mb. Than strange when I change in FTP to passive, than my speed seems stable around 3 Mb stil 2 Mb slower than explorer. I use commander from the time it was called Norton Commander then Windows commander.

The growing file is not daownloaded by TC. I use a donnlaod-Programm (jdownloader). TC only "watches" this file and it appears in the Shift-Ctrl-B List tough it is not in the selected subfolders. but on the same level.

The uploadblocksize has no effect on normal copying, just on ftp. Normal copying uses a Windows function (CopyFileEx), so it should work just fine. Alternatively, you can use the Explorer method: Select the files, press Ctrl+C, then Tab and Ctrl+V (Copy+Paste). Some exotic devices are tested only with the Explorer, so the Explorer method should work best.

I had the same problem with slow transfers when using F5 or F6 from my PC to my WHS. Now tried the Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V in TC and it transfers full speed.
If I only knew about that trick before...

So what's wrong with CopyFileEx? Could it be an option to somehow integrate the copy/cut paste options from the Explorer method when using the F5/F6 in TC?

Cheers!

You can do this already: Configuration - Options - Copy/Delete - Explorer method. However, it's much more limited, e.g. you cannot copy comments and thumbnails with the files, and cannot rename during copy. It's also not possible to use this method in "synchronize dirs".

I have no idea why CopyFileEx is so slow on your computer. Maybe it's caused by a virus scanner, or you have a huge thumbnail database - but then local transfers would be slow too...
