Comments (descript.ion) not carried over if file move, copy

Post by *Rumble »

I tried to copy or move a file, but the comment (as kept in the descript.ion file did not go with the transferred file. After spending an hour figuring out what was wrong, I thought it would be useful to point out to anyone else having this problem that (at least) TWO settings need to be right.

1. Configuration > Options > Operation > File Comments -
Copy comments with files should be checked

AND

2. Configuration > Options > Operation - Copy/Delete -
Use standard copy method (recommended) should be checked

Hello, Robert.

Confirmed.
Copy comments with files should be checked
Confirmed, hm, sort of:
Use standard copy method (recommended) should be checked
As a matter of fact, if you wish to preserve comments when copying / moving, you must not use the Explorer copy / move method (ctrl-c ctrl-v, ctrl-x ctrl-v), because Explorer does not support the 4NT style comments stored in the descript.ion files nor comments stored in files.bbs.

Kind regards,
Karl

Which leaves the question, I guess, of whether any copy option OTHER than
"Use Standard copy method (recommended)" would ensure that comments (descript.ion) would be carried over during a copy/paste operation.

This is not true, the option Copy comments with files is enough to make TC handle comment files

Sorry TS4242, but your assertion that "the option Copy comments with files is enough to make TC handle comment files" [implying it will work regardless of any other option selected RPR] is at odds with karlchen's assertion that "you must not use the Explorer copy / move method" [implying that even if one selects the copy comments with files, it still won't work if Explorer copy/move is selected RPR] (Sorry karlchen). I'll let you guys come up with a consistent position . . . .

Thanks for your attention to my post

karlchen here was not talking about TC's option but about Explorer method where you copy/move files using the clipboard.

Hey, guys.

The answer is pretty simple:
There are two ways of making Total Commander use the Explorer mode for copy / move:
Either activate this option inside the T.C. configuration as the default copy/move mode or use the key combinations Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V (copy) and Ctrl-X / Ctrl-V (move) on demand.
In both cases, file comments stored in descript.ion files will be ignored.

Cheers,
Karl

Indeed the comments can be copied with all methods EXCEPT for the Explorer method, because the Explorer knows nothing about these comments.

My apologies to all of you for misunderstanding what you were trying to tell me. I confused your explanation of moving some or all of the _contents_ of files (using Explorer Ctrl-V etc.), with moving files (by clicking on "handles" (i.e. file names) and using Windows Explorer-like ctrl-click-drag or shift-click-drag to copy or move the _entire_ file.

Thank you for your patience and tolerance

As old as this thread is, my question seems valid after all: is there a chance that the shortcuts CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+V when used in Total Commander will not use Explorer’s feature and – instead – use TC’s file copy/move functions (F5/F6) in a manner that Explorer’s shortcut commands work, i.e. keep the command CTRL+C/CTRL+X in memory until CTRL+V is hit? That would greatly ease copy/move file operations as far as copying file comments is concerned?
