[8.0ß1] Test/Unpacking archives does not start immediately

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

[8.0ß1] Test/Unpacking archives does not start immediately

Post by *Biozynotiker »

Testing or Unpacking archives (only Rar testet) starts not always immediately.
TC takes up to 10 minutes to show the progressmeter for archives that contains many files.
TC 7.xx starts testing/unpacking immediately, or at least, shows a empty progressmeter for a while.

It seems that TC tries to count all files in the archive, before the progressmeter is shown, so you can thinking that TC is crashed.

*Make sure you will test this behavior on archives, that tc has not cached before*

This is a BUG forum...
This is not a Bug as TCs UnPack-Routines ofc have to check how many files are in the archive for the new progress-bars

Solution for your problem: get a newer PC :D

I think this is a bug, because TC freeze in this phase. Windows marks TC as "not responsive" and tries to close.
And btw. way, I have a "newer pc" (I2600k,16GB Ram, SSD and all that stuff..)

Edit:
- Try to archive your windows folder (rar) (e.g. windows "winsxs" folder)
- Reboot your pc (clear cache)
- Test archive with TC8 > TC hangs for a while

Unfortunately I could NOT reproduce this error. TC starts after 3 seconds with a 10 GByte file here. My guess is that a slow virus scanner scans the file when you try to open it.

I can reproduce this easily by creating a solid rar archive, with tons of files in it. (Virusscan is disabled for testing.)

He said many files, not one large file.

Well, my test archive did indeed contain many files...

It's also possible that the file is heavily fragmented. To get the file names from RAR, TC has to read the entire file from beginning to end, which can take quite a while.
