TC should output an error message instead of viewing the image as binary.

a) you should notice that by watching the titlebar...
b) you should be able to clean configure a filemanager - if not -> dont use it
c) I dont like messages for obvious things - if a pic is shown is text the conf is wrong no need to put an message instead there as it could be possible i do this on purpose...

It seems that this is intentional. On error message when external viewer is not specified, Christian answered here.
