Closing the date selection dialog (e.g. in file attributes or search) via the window close button brings some other program to front.

Confirmed.
OK button works fine. Cancel causes some flickering at first but then it closes the dialog. And the standard close button closes the dialog and then switches focus to the last active application window.
However this happens only if there are some non-minimized application windows in the background. If there are no other applications (or all of them are minimized) everything works as expected (even the flickering after pressing Cancel disappears).
BTW, you might need to enable Aero to see the flickering.

This is a known Lazarus problem - just use the Cancel button instead.
