TC 8 final - deleting files

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC 8 final - deleting files

Post by *Gothmoth »

im using TC 8 x64 (final) on win7 64 bit.

when i select an file(s) and press the delete key on the keyboard a window comes up and asks me if i want to delete the file(s). when i press YES the file will not be deleted.

that happens quite often but not always.
when it happens i have to repeat the steps two, sometimes three times , before the file will be actually deleted.

again this does not happen always but at least 10% of the time.
i first thought i was doing something wrong but over the last two days i took close attention.

maybe im wrong but it seems (im not sure) that it happens very often for PDF files. but that is maybe only because i deleted a lot of PDF files.

i also wonder why the "delete confirmation window" that comes up sometimes look different.

screencapture:

if this happens it does not matter if i do it quick or wait 10 seconds between the delete attemps.

Hi, Gothmoth.
I've seen a similar behavior a few times before. For example I deleted a file like you did and the file stayed untouched - no errors, nothing. I could see it in TC and also in Explorer. And after some time (usually seconds), it suddenly disappeared. I couldn't always find out, what caused it, but almost always it was caused by a 3rd application, that was accessing the file in some weird way(*). In those cases, Explorer behaved the same way as TC did, so I don't think it's a bug in TC.

*note: For example when you play a video file in MPC-HC, you can delete that file from your HDD completely (the file is not locked). And MPC-HC will continue playing it as if nothing happened. While this is a normal behavior, sometimes it (and other not so common behaviors) can cause surprising situations.

i thought about this too before writing here....

BUT (an it´s a big but) i never have seen this kind of behaviour with the 32BIT version of TC... never in all the years.

if, for example, the virus scanner would be the cause of the problem, then i would guess the 32 bit version of TC should show the same behavior.. not?

the files are untouched.
i have done nothing with them prior to deleting.
so it is very unlikely the operating system will block access to them.

and as i wrote after 10 seconds (and longer) they are still there.

I am not using TC x64 very often, because there is one very important plugin that has not been converted yet. So I can't say, if this happens in that version more often than in TC x32, but I've seen similar issues in TC x32 and Explorer too. My opinion is that it's not a bug in TC, but maybe someone else will think otherwise.

It is probably because Vistadelete=1 is now default in TC 8.0 - in previous TC versions Vistadelete=0 was default. With Vistadelete=1 TC leaves it to Windows to delete, and apparantly this is sometimes done with a delay.
i also wonder why the "delete confirmation window" that comes up sometimes look different.
