v 8.0 - 32-bit: Wrong date on new (r.click) EXCEL FILE

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

v 8.0 - 32-bit: Wrong date on new (r.click) EXCEL FILE

Post by *Bjorn »

Wrong time/date stamp when creating a new Excel file via right click NEW.
(office 2007). File created today shows year 2006, date 25 sept. No such error when creating new txt file via same route. Tried same outside of Tcmd, creating a new excel file in Explorer via right click and NEW. No such timestamp error there.

Confirmed, i can reproduce the issue using 8.01RC4x32 (Win7SP1x32).
[right-click + New file procedure in Explorer results in files with correct timestamps for me too]

Interesting fact that this "wrong-timestamp" problem affects every single Microsoft Office products for me (Excel, PowerPoint, Access etc), but TC creates the "Microsoft Word (.docx)" documents timestamp's just fine (!), with the actual date and time.

The problem even affects new "Journal Documents" & "WinRAR ZIP archives (.zip)" for me, so i guess it's not just Office-related.

Tested under 7.57a & 7.56a too, and i can confirm the problem using these versions either.

Is it wrong or does it really matter?

The modification date of the new office file is just the same as the date of the office template file.

Because the new "unedited" file is just a copy of this template file, the behavior of TC looks correct to me( compared to explorer).

Oh, the template files... i guess you're right, that must be the cause of this whole thing.

I found out that in my case a new zip file created by right click in TC, then selecting "New" -> "WinRAR ZIP archive (.zip)" always results in a new file with exactly the same timestamp as "c:\Program Files\WinRAR\zipnew.dat" file's one.

Anyway i think in this case Explorer's behaviour is better - a file which is just created at the moment should retrieve the current date & time as it's timestamp, instead of any other... it could be confusing for the user.

Yes, TC just copies the template file to the new path and location, and it keeps the last modified time of the template. However, the creation time is of course the current time. The last modified time will change when you actually write something in that file, and save it.
