Hi!
I have installed totalcommander 8.01 on Windows 8.
And when i start the program the option dialog pops up and when i try to change anything and push "OK" or the "Apply" button. A dialog window appears with this message
"Error cannot write C:\Program Files(x86)\totalcmd\ !"
"Please remove the write protection!"
Does anyone have an idea what it could be?

Error when trying to save configuration

When you installed your TC, you decided to put its configuration files to its directory. However, in Windows Vista and newer, one cannot just write to "Program Files" anything he wants.
Basically, you have three options:
1. install TC into a different directory
2. or always run it with elevated privileges (not recommended, but many do so anyway)
3. or change the directory, where TC saves its configuration (you can use https://plugins.ghisler.com/addons/inireloc.zip)

Windows 10 Pro x64, Windows 11 Pro x64
4. Change the privileges of C:\Program Files(x86)\totalcmd\ so that you can write to the directory.
It will be less safe, but not more unsafe than option 1 and 2 in umbra's suggestions.

Sometimes you have to take ownership of a folder/file before you can change it's permissions.
But otherwise use https://plugins.ghisler.com/addons/inireloc.zip to move yoyr ini files.

Indeed, especially when the medium (e.g. a USB stick) comes from some other PC. Then it uses that PC's user accounts, which are unknown on the other PC.Sometimes you have to take ownership of a folder/file before you can change it's permissions.
