JFYI
Just tested with TC 8.5b3 32bit and 64bit under Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 - they all use Miscosoft Sans Serif for all three font settings and not MS Sans Serif
Thanks for testing Petermad . That is certainly interesting. I tested with 8.01 on my job-computer and it also used Microsoft Sans Serif for all three fonts... I really don't know why my homecomputer used MS Sans Serif for two of the font-settings with a clean ini. That's weird since you point out the changes were made in v6...(!) I've disabled ClearType in registry on my homecoputer, but that shouldn't affect Total Commanders choice of default font.
Anyways, I've changed my ini-files to use Microsoft Sans Serif for my Dark-Blue themed TC to get the unicode support. That's what I currently prefer with disabled ClearType. On my work-machines (which has ClearType on as default policy) I want to change the font to something else because Microsoft Sans Serif with ClearType looks bad Maybe I'll try the new default Segoe UI in bold, Tahoma or maybe Arial. Hmmm, I guess I'll be doing some testing.
I had changed my font to Tahoma, because it looks the same as Microsoft Sans Serif (at least to me), but it had the advantage of showing a I (capital i) and l (small L) different. Microsoft Sans Serif showed them both as vertical lines without horizontal lines at top or bottom.
I see now that Segoe UI (semibold) shows the I with horizontal lines at top and bottom, so I will give it a chance.

Maybe you had changed/saved your font settings yourself in some older TC version when MS Sans Serif was still the standard. TC also checks whether Microsoft Sans Serif exists before using it.

I recommend that you give the new font a chance. I switched to it myself more than a year ago, and it also took me a few days to adapt to it. But it's really worth a try, it's easier to read once you are used to it.
I agree, and I welcome the change. I'm still unsure about the size (still deciding between 9 or 10)

For exactly the same reason, i used (and still use) Tahoma in the past too.
Using MS Sans Serif for the file list windows is really a very bad choice just because of this single reason alone. You shouldn't want to go back to this font...
I am just curious if the default font should be changed to Segoe UI automatically after the update.
No - it is only for new installations
This is not correct, I upgraded from 8.01 to beta5 and I stared at the ugly Segoe font. I had to changed it immediately, it looked awful on my 1920x1080 laptop (W7x64).

Are you sure you are still using the same wincmd.ini (same location) as you did with your 8.01
In order to use Segoe TC would have to change the content of your existing wincmd.ini during installation which it never does.
But you might unknowingly have changed the placement of wincmd.ini depending on the choices you made during the installation of TC8.5b5. In that case a new wincmd.ini could be made, but then all you old settings will not be used anymore.
Apart from that I agree that Segoe UI is ugly and hard to read, especially with font-smoothing disabled, which I prefer because font-smoothing makes me dizzy.

So do you have a better suggestion what font I should use? Segoe UI is the default system font, and Microsoft Sans Serif is very outdated - people complain all the time that TC looks like Windows 3.1 because of it.
This is right. Please consider that users in this and other threads have stated that they have changed the system font or the whole theme to their needs. Why not use the current system font?
TC should by default use the best font for each user. Which one it is, we can't know. But you can't deny that current Windows font has some advantage, because user either specifically selected it or at least doesn't hate it enough to do something about it. That's more than you can say about any other font.

I used TC v8.01 x64 (W7) and upgraded to v8.50 b5 yesterday. The only settings which was changed was Font settings (my own color theme and other tweaks were not changed). TC was upgraded to same location (c:\program files\totalcmd).
The new version will change the font to Segoe UI font if there's no font specified in your ini-file. i.e. it will change the font on new installations and old installations with no font defined. If you have no font defined and roll back to an earlier version, the font will change back to Microsoft Sans Serif.

Sorry, I cannot do that, because the tab widths would get unpredictable. Segoe UI 9 gives similar widths as Microsoft Sans Serif, 8.
