My Computer as a drive button

Post by *HAL 9000 »

There is My Computer and My documents in drive dropdown combobox in latest beta...Not all people use this dropdown combobox (like me, it's hidden)...And latest Android devices do not use USB Mass Storage (Samsung Galaxy S4 and all 4.2+ devices...), only MTP...so you can't access your internal and external phone drives using drive button because there is none! You can only access it though explorer or with TC plugin and that is not very practical...but you can access it through dropdown combobox in latest beta - but not through button (!?). There is also ShowExtraDrives option that works for combobox only.. :(

This ShowExtraDrives could be used to determine display of drive button also I think..anyway, please consider this, I don't see a reason why dropdown combobox should be preferred over drive buttons..

P.S. of course, there could also be separate option for button only, like ShowExtraDrivesButtons or something similar...or maybe you can show button similar to explorer, with PD label or something (in explorer when I connect my SGS4 there is "Portable Device" icon....)

You can always use Alt+F1 or Alt+F2 to open drop-down drive list even when combobox is hidden.
Also there are commands cm_SrcOpenDrives, cm_LeftOpenDrives and cm_RightOpenDrives that may be used from button bar or any other hotkey.

At least, you can use button with command cm_OpenDrives to go to My Computer virtual folder.

After uising 8.5 for a while now i would also like to have the "Computer" virtual folder accessible quicker/easier.

Maybe Christian can add this to wishlist for 8.6 and make it configurable? ;)

Where is the problem? Just press Alt+F1, the "+".

Or create a button in the button bar with command

As mentioned in another thread the problem is not that "My computer" isn't available as a drive button.
The problem is that the drive dropdown list and the drive buttons don't show some items by default* that "My computer" does.

* Options to hide them should be added as well.

I vote for removing the new items in the drive dropdown. Why? Because they are no drives!

Add ShowExtraDrives=0 to the [Configuration] section of your wincmd.ini and restart Total Commander 8.50.
As others were keen on having these items added I doubt they will be removed again.

What is the next step? All kind of commands can be executed in all kind of interface elements. What a confusion

Ease of accessibility is the problem.

I regularly use Alt+Fx and then type the drive, but sometimes - as i'm working on multiple computers at the same time - i just use the mouse and then it is two clicks with aiming on a relatively small drive letter in the combo box vs. one click on a relatively larger icon in the drive bar.

Adding a button for cm_opendrives doesn't solve the problem of saving clicks.

Optimal solution is to make it available in both, combo and bar, by configuration. So others who dont want to use/see it (for whatever reason) dont need to see it...

It was just a suggestion/wish. At least there is two persons (me and the Thread starter) who think it would make usage easier ;)

Your point is valid but I guess it's more than acceptable to navigate to special drives like phones by page-down and cursor keys. Maybe there is even a better solution that involves direct key navigation. For this solution delayed loading must be implemented. Seeing special drives without further interactions is definitely an advantage.

A compromise or maybe even better solution would be to have the special drives in a submenu. So you would type a character like # first to open the menu and then hit the single key for the special drive. In this case it's sufficient to load the special drives when opening the submenu.

I'm not sure which solution is better but both solutions are definitely better than what we have now.

Personally I'm quite pleased about the new entries, but the direct acces to devices would be even better addon. Having another submenu will not give an advantage in quick access I think.

About the non-drive entries in the dropdownlist. The network neighborhood is also there, and cannot live without it anymore..

I do not use the drive button bar, but for the people not using drive-combobox or buttonbar I could imagine it's handy.

Can we make this sign configurable? Now working on my work laptop with it for the first time, and without the numpad I need to use shift to acces the "+" and "*" (US keyboard layout).

I didn't want to put it in the drive bar because it bears a high risk to add one more line to the drive bar (when using two drive bars).

That's true but I think having two lines where I can hide certain drives (to have only one line) is better than a drive bar where important drives are missing.

For those wondering how to create a toolbar button to open "Computer" in the Windows Explorer:
Image: https://i.imgur.com/OrKa8Sj.png

Command: shell:MyComputerFolder
Parameters:
Start path:
Icon file: %WINDIR%\System32\shell32.dll
Icon #: 15
Tooltip: Computer

And here is the list of all the other Shell Commands to Access the Special Folders in Windows 7/Vista/XP.

For "My computer" : We can add "cm_OpenDrives" in the button bar

Alternative method for "My documents" as a drive button:
1. Run TC, Net => Network Connections...

2. Specify the driver letter, for example: Y

3. Specify the folder, for example in Win 7: \\(computer name)\Users\(user name)\Documents

4. Finish
