I've just read the docu on "Compare by Content" and at last I understand why it often does the "right" thing but not always.
If you have two files selected, or a file selected in the target window, or a file with the same name in the target window, it does the obvious thing. Otherwise, what I always expected and wanted it to do was to compare the file under the cursor in each window. Then you could just click on a file in each window and hit a cm_CompareFilesByContent button (or use the menu if you like that sort of thing), whereas you currently have to go to the keyboard to Ctrl-click the two files.
The suggested behaviour would be more helpful than bringing up the compare window with only one file specified as currently happens.
Suggestion: compare by content - files under cursors

It seems like using %P%N %T%M approach to compare two files is more helpful.
Same thing here. I always have to select two files with different names to compare them...whereas you currently have to go to the keyboard to Ctrl-click the two files

I use these both solutions too. TCmd's comparison as a quick-compare, and Araxis Merge with Beyond Compare as a real-merge tools.
Nevertheless when it comes to files with different names I think it's better not to force user to SELECT files, but use currently active files on both panels for comparison.
