I guess that TC 8.5 isn't in their database yet. It always takes a while also with antivirus software to handle new versions of a program.

I have noticed the same problem on a WinXP SP3 machine freshly installed: v8.50 has this flickering issue, while v8.01 works just fine.
BTW, it happens also when only folders are present in a directory (so it is not affected by icons to be extracted from exe/lnk files).
Before you ask, the drivers for the video card are up to date.

When you open TC & it reads up directory listing slowly.. Donot know Y.. I am also looking for previous release 8.0x which is said to be faster as compared to 8.5x
Cannot track/trace the reason for the same.. in TC 8.5x
Closing & restarting TC 8.5x, it reads the same directory listing faster..
The directory listing doesnot come in one-go, Its kinda has a slag in listing directory at times or when started TC 1stly.
Testing Using the default settings of TC, No Customisation done with TC..
Cheers!!

When this happens, does it get faster when you disable icons in Configuration - Options - Icons (without closing TC)?

Please answer my question! I'm trying to find out what is slowing down Total Commander on your system, but I need your cooperation to find the reason.
Here is my question again:
When this happens, does it get faster when you disable icons in Configuration - Options - Icons (without closing TC)?

Ok I have tested
disabling icons in Configuration - Options - Icons (without closing TC) - there is lag(lesser) in directory listing..
Enabling icons in Configuration - Options - Icons (without closing TC) - there is lag(more) in directory listing..
Then once i close TC, it works fine from second time onward.
On 2ndtime restarting TC
Even with enable Icons in configuration - No lag in directory listing..

So it's not the icons. One important thing which was changed is the time when the folders are checked whether they are shared or not:
TC 8.0x: While reading the directory.
TC 8.5x: When displaying the directory for the first time.
Please try to turn off this option:
wincmd.ini
[Configuration]
TestIfSharedDir=0
TC 8.0x: While reading the directory.
TC 8.5x: When displaying the directory for the first time.
Please try to turn off this option:
wincmd.ini
[Configuration]
TestIfSharedDir=0

Hmm, really strange that this is slow. Are you in a Windows domain? Or a remote desktop environment? I just wonder why this operation is so slow for a few people, but not for most others...

Similar problem was noted earlier (8.01 at least), but simply added TOTALCMD64.EXE into excluded processes of Windows Defender for Win 8-8.1 to solve "slow opening" dirs that time. The problem is once clicking some dir the dir content not to appear immidiately and stuck with blank panel up to few+ seconds to appear. Can live with files to appear immidiately and file icons after avir check, but blank dir till check is not acceptable. The dirs and content and environment didn't change from that time therefore tried to obtain more info on 8.50 x64 seeing this thread.
Problem is reproducible: Start/Restart the PC and here it is (dir contains 8 subdirs; 1 pdf; 1 txt; 4 jpg).
TC Icons settings:
1. All associated + EXE = Lag (No dir content to appear for some secs and appear with all file icons).
2. All associated = Lag (No dir content to appear for some secs and appear with all file icons).
3. Only standart icons = No problems.
4. No icons = No problems.
Associated:
PDF - SumatraPDF
TXT - AkelPad
JPG - FastStone Image Viewer
Running TC with or without Admin rights see no difference (fresh TC 8.50 install with default/initial ini on test).
Failed trying to catch lag with Process Monitor which seems interesting due to after PC restart / quick PM start and clicking on dir there is no lag at all and files with related icons to appear immidiately.
After the dir lagged first time it opens fast till next shutdown/restart. TestIfSharedDir=0 shows no difference (not shared dir just in case).
Same dir opens immidiately with Windows Explorer, but the icons for files appear after a while one by one.
System: i7; Win8.1 64bit; SSD 256Gb
