Eliminating duplicates, I - moving files

Post by *sybariten »

When you move files from one side to another and there are some files with identivcal names, TC will tell you this and ask whether you want to cancel, overwrite, rename etc.

Personally i alway want to nove those files and overwrite, if the filesizes are identical (i then consider the files to be identical).

Wouldnt it be grand if there was some way to "move only those files that are identical in name and size, to the other side, and overwrite" ?
Or is it only me that wants this ?

If you consider those files identical, wouldn't it be faster to simply delete them in their source dir (not move them)? Just a side note.

Why isn't Synchronize dirs suitable for this, BTW?

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I think you can use Synchronise Dirs to achieve this. There is the option "ignore date".
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

Hmm, no i dont think so... I would have to manually look through the files and see which are the same, right ?

Well.... consider this example. i have a left view that looks like this:

A.jpg 10k
B.jpg 12k
C.jpg 14k
D.jpg 16k

And a right side that looks like this

B.jpg 12k
C.jpg 25k
D.jpg 16k
E.jpg 18k

What i wanna do here is move A from left to right, along with B and D. those sizes match so the files are the same. I would get the most possible files in the right side.(ABCDE) C from the left side is for later consideration as its size is different from C on the right.
If iäm not mistaken, what synchronize dirs want to do is basicly just copy the most possible stuff frpom left to right and perhaps from right to left, in roder to make the dirs similar. This is not my goal.
Essentially, you could say that i just want the synch.dirs-function to use "move" instead of "copy". I havent found a way to do that.

peace!

Maybe first copy, then delete? (Sorry, don't have time to test it right now.)

Do the following in synch dirs:
1. Compare with ignore date
2. set the display, so only the identical files are shown.
3. Select all those files
4. Delete left
5. include left files in the view
6. synchronise from left to right
7. set the display, so only the identical files are shown.
8 Select all those files
9 Delete left

hmmmm... at least it is working, tested myself ;-)

Actually i didnt understand anything of wjat you did after 4. :) well, i dont really need to in a way because the delete function is exactly what i need. Thanks! (if i had done my homework ofcourse i would have known that synchronize dirs can delete files, not only copy them).
