-TC8.51a x64bit Context Menu SLOW

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

-TC8.51a x64bit Context Menu SLOW

Post by *leedlt »

I recently updated to TC8.51a x64. Ever since if I right click on an item in one of the directory windows it will take about 5 minutes for TC to complete the action. During this time the mouse "busy" icon is active when TC is selected. If I wait long enough it does eventually open the context menu.

If while TC is working to open the context menu I try to open the Taskbar's Start-Button context menu or the Windows Explorer context menu, that hangs too and pops-up a message saying that the "application is not responding" and if I want to end it.

If I do not try to open a context menu in TC, it works everywhere else without issue.

I uninstalled TCx64 and installed the 32/64bit combination. In TC 32bit I have no issues with context menus in TC or elsewhere; only if I try it with the 64bit version.

Sounds like there is a faulty x64 context menu entry of a 3rd party program.
It is quite often, that it works with Explorer only, but fails with others.
You will find a lot of those threads in the forum, which have finally been solved.

You may find the guilty one by using ShellExView (x64 Version in your case)

Just enable "Options - Mark Non Microsoft Extensions"
Next sort by "Type" and disable only marked entries of type "Context Menu".
Restart your PC and check if the problem is gone.

Finally enable half of the former disabled entries, restart and check again.

If the problem is back, it is within the enabled half, if not, it is within the still disabled ones.

You may en-/disable one by one and check again until you found the problematic one.

Nice to hear ... and YES this is a side effect of this tool: It does not just restore the entries, but write them back in a correct way.

Well, I spoke too soon. I don't know why it was working again, but now it's not working again, again  .

I've narrowed it down to one entry that ShellExView finds:
Extension Name: CeDesktopIntegration
Disabled: No
Type: Context Menu
Description: McAfee Endpoint Encryption for Files and Folders Explorer Extension
Version: 3, 2, 7, 4
Product Name: McAfee, Inc.(R) Endpoint Encryption for Files and Folders(TM)
Company: McAfee, Inc.
My Computer: No
Desktop: No
Control Panel: No
My Network Places: No
Entire Network: No
Remote Computer: No
Filename: C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\Endpoint Encryption for Files and Folders\SbCeDesktopIntegration.dll
CLSID: {1D1C0452-D369-41A7-92D6-26688B3A73DA}
File Created Time: Mon-03Oct11 18:41:24
CLSID Modified Time: Wed-18Jan12 12:03:14
Microsoft: No
File Extensions: *, .URL, Drive, folder, InternetShortcut, opensearchfilefolderresult
File Attributes: A
File Size: 1.022.176
.NET Extension: No
Digital Signature:

If I disable this entry in ShellExView everything works normally.

If I enable it, in Windows Explorer everything seems to work normally, but in TC trying to open the context menu on a file hangs TC for about 5 minutes while it appears to be waiting on something.

The TC task in the task manager is using no system time, so I assume it's actually doing nothing.

If anybody knows what might be causing this, a tip would be much appreciated.

You have already found the reason :D
Stop using that strange McAfee tool, there is no real need for it.
Also McAfee has stopped "McAfee Endpoint Encryption for Files and Folders" with version 4.2.x at 21-Aug-13.

I can't drop use of McEPE, because my employer requires it. If Files and Folders Support has been dropped maybe I can do a reinstall, although I've heard that it's a real PITA, because I'd have to de-crypt my disks first, etc. etc.

I can't see any difference between when the shell setting is on or off, other than that TC works when it's off  , so I think I'll just leave it off and be glad about it.

Many thanks.
