Sorry, I guess this should be a Windows 8.1 question not a Total Commander question but I expect the bright sparks in this forum to provide a quicker answer

I have just installed Windows 8.1 with a brief stay in Windows 8.

I changed the icon to run TC in administrator mode to stop this message on Windows 7 which I can't seem to do in W8.1.

When I right click on the icon I get a whole lot of options under W7 ("Run as Administrator" being the important one) but under W8.1 I get "unpin and close" options only

How can I ensure that TC loads in administrator mode and doesn't display the "provide admin privileges" message under W8.1?

Taskbar buttons in W7/W8 doen't provide usual context menu items, these are not links to files but a special items. However you can do a right click on taskbar button and then do a right click onto top menu item with application name, and it will show usual menu.

When you choose to start program elevated, there is no simple way to get rid of UAC warnings. You can do three things here: 1. start program w/o elevation (most secure way), 2. disable UAC (most insecure way), 3. create task scheduler item to start elevated TC and use schtasks.exe /Run /TN task_name to start that task (it won't show UAC message).

Hold Shift-key down while you right click on the TC icon in the task bar - then you should get the context menu you need.

I also searched for the StartUp folder and put a LNK to TC there so hopefully the next time I switch on TC will be automatically loaded

BTW you still can add panels with LNKs to taskbar (just like old good quick launch panel). I don't pin buttons to taskbar (they look ugly because I always disable hiding window titles) but keep them on such panel instead (when I have a lot of buttons, I see >> button where they are displayed as menu, and subfolders are submenus).

This trick is mentioned on many sites, e.g. (first googled one):

Just place such LNK to startup folder, and it will start elevated TC w/o UAC prompt. But, as I said, it is not a safe way of using TC.

Being a newbie with Windows 8.1 I made a couple or three false starts but I got it right in the end.

Then it created the LNK on the desktop so I had to move it to StartUp (as you suggested)
