New installer for Total Commander - please test it!
As you may have noticed, Google Chrome refuses to download TC 8.51a for being "unknown malware". Since there is no way to contact Google about the problem, I have created a new installer which combines the currently two parts (self extractor to TEMP, then install.exe) into a single installer.
The new installer doesn't unpack any files to temp, it extracts them directly to the target chosen by the user.
You can get the new installer here:
http://totalcmd2.s3.amazonaws.com/tcmd851ax32.exe
http://totalcmd2.s3.amazonaws.com/tcmd851ax64.exe
http://totalcmd2.s3.amazonaws.com/tcmd851ax32_64.exe
This isn't a new version of Total Commander itself, just the installer, the help file and the order form have been updated.

No one knows. Virustotal shows 0/57 scanners detect anything, but Chrome still thinks that it is bad. Anyway, please give me some feedback on the new installer, so I can replace the old one as soon as possible!
Btw, I plan to further improve it, like removing the background window, and requesting admin rights only when needed. But I didn't want to include this in this urgent update now...

Works fine on Win98 even. After upgrading from 6.53, the new version accepted my key and settings just fine. I suppose it's better to copy the files directly in one step as it is now.
Google is getting more and more arrogant in ruling over the internet and people's computer systems. Few seem to have a problem accepting it.

Yes it does, just like all previous installers!

I tested it even for Windows 95b! It should also work on the original Windows 95. Both the installer and TC load functions dynamically via LoadLibrary when they are missing in old Windows versions.

Please also test the option "Install normally", not just "Update". In this case, I recommend that you backup your ini files (just to be on the safe side). See menu Help - About Total Commander for their locations.

You can give an hint to user that this "feature" can be dissabled !ghisler(Author) wrote:As you may have noticed, Google Chrome refuses to download TC 8.51a for being "unknown malware". See this Malware detection is not the job of a browser ! (specially if signatures are online and managed by Ggg.)
If you decide anyhow to accept google dictature, you can request a Software Review
I tested it by "installing normally" over a manually copied version 6.53. Settings and FTP presets were retained in the Windows directory where they are located by default. I noticed that the older HLP file didn't get deleted, which is probably correct that the program didn't make an assumption that it was not needed anymore.

Tested the new installer on a system where I don't have admin rights (would require a password). I chose 'normal installation' and selected a target folder where I have write permissions and it worked. However installer stub has level="highestAvailable" in resources so it still will require elevation even when it won't need admin rights.
This definitely didn't work before!
I observed that there was no question if I want to install for all users or just for myself. Then I entered a target folder with no write permissions. I just got an error and the prompt to select another target folder.
So it seems elevation doesn't work in all cases (which is fine in my use case...

This is actually intentional: Users who can't get admin rights can still install the program this way. That's what "highestAvailable" is for.
Yes, I didn't want to make too many changes to the installer for the release version. Requesting admin rights only as needed is very complex (like tcmadmin.exe in TC) with launching a second hidden copy of the installer and passing data between the two. I plan to do this in a later version, but will introduce it in a beta test. However installer stub has level="highestAvailable" in resources so it still will require elevation even when it won't need admin rights.

Yes, I changed it from "requireAdministrator" to "highestAvailable". It's almost the same, except for users who would have to enter a password to get admin rights. Users who have this special setting can still run the installer as admin via right click context menu.
