Haven't you released 6.03a because of cracks for 6.03?
Hello,
It's weird that you released 6.03 straight after appearing 3 cracks (by TSRh team, by AGAIN and carded key by someone else) and there is only 1 fix.
So it seems like releasing new version to make these cracks unusable..
Maybe you need help with protection of TC?

Probably you should read the forum here. A wise man, named Christian Ghisler said in this post

So the release of 6.03a is really not intented to stop cracks workingYes, TC is also quite weakly protected. However, the fact that there are no keygens are a big plus:
- Many people fear to use cracks because they could include a backdoor or install a virus
- Companies usually don't allow cracked software
Remember that your goal isn't to minimize unregistered users - your goal should be to maximize registered users! That's the reason why TC doesn't stop working after 30 days like many other shareware tools do. If it did, people would simply delete it and install some other software...

Cornelis

I cannot believe that you are discussing about cracking TC in the official forum!Guest007 wrote:Hello,

Please, have some respect for the author!

Why not? G! is right and in long term it works. I use to crack TC for years, later decided to not crack it and just click 1 2 3, and eventually bought it. I bought it when I had my own money and after finding out that there will never be a better tool.
For NOT cracking you need to develop unique way of thinking and it's not respect for the author. I do not know him personaly, but I know TC personally
. It's the background that counts.
After going open source I decided that I'd never use a piece of software that is not GPL. If TC is ever released for linux I'll buy a licence and allow this to be the only non-GPL proggy on my box.

The 6.03a release really was for fixing the parallel port error, which was detected only one day after the release of TC 6.03.
Cracks really cannot be prevented, but they aren't such a big problem for us anyway, because TC can be used forever also when not cracked (by pressing the 1, 2, 3 buttons), and there are no limitations in the shareware version. Other very successful shareware like Winzip or Winrar also uses this approach.
The effect is a very wide distribution of the program, which means not only a lot of unregistered users, but also many registered users, who either want to support my work, or who use the program at a company. Most companies will not use cracks, because they risk to be visited by the police (which has a very bad effect on the company reputation).

My concern here was not if someone should crack TC or not. We all (almost) have followed that path during our first encounter with TC (WC).
My concern was on the ethical part of the matters, i.e. discussing cracking failures and the like over the official forum which is even hosted by the developer himself.
I always used to know Christian your "flexibility" on the issue but hey, there are some limits. Maybe we should consider reverse (software) engineering and get the code out of the executable file also!!

I see NOTHING BAD in my post. I just thought it was weird to release new versions straight after previous release, that's all. And I asked author about this cuz I know that releasing new versions is one of the method against crackers...
I don't know what you think about me and my question but I really respect author and his project. I use this project since 1998 and think it's a best file manager.
I am gonna buy it, but $30 is a high price for my country =(
As for "Maybe we should consider reverse (software) engineering and get the code out of the executable file also!!"
I am not against this and would show you different checks, such as checks for 23B9h and 237h
but I will not do this on this forum %)

I also want to buy a license... I'm just wainting to get a credit card.
Cracked or not, shareware or not, TC is the first thing I run at the startup and the last thing I close before shutdown...
I would really like to have a license number on my signature..

Saludos...

Why don't you run it as a service at start-up? In addition it's pretty safe not to close TC while shutting down.DKG wrote:...TC is the first thing I run at the startup and the last thing I close before shutdown...
