Forgot master password for FTP connections

Post by *Polda18 »

Hello. I've lost my master password for FTP connections. Is there any way to reset it? I need to protect my FTP connection, but without knowing exactly the master password I can't. I can't remember if I wrote it down somewhere, so I need to make new. Any chance to get my stored passwords secure?

Well, if there is a valid chance to get your passwords without knowing the master password, the encryption is useless.

So the answer is "No"

TC uses AES 256bit to protect the passwords, with SHA256 (HMAC with 1000 iterations) for the password to encryption key conversion function. This makes even brute force password recovery very slow.

I recommend that you write down the master password on paper and put it in a safe place separated from your PC, e.g. a furniture safe, or your wallet. Of course you need to change your master password (via Ctrl+F) if the master password gets stolen.

@ghisler: I did, but I've lost the paper (meaning I placed it somewhere, months without use and then forgot where the paper is).

Any other chance to reset the password? Is it stored in some kind of file or registry? So that I do not need to reinstall the TC? Just delete the passwords storage and set a master password new then? There must be some way to restore protected passwords. If you do not trust the public, you can PM me or send e-mail (as administrator you should see my registration e-mail)...

Why do you need to reinstall TC? Only because of the forgotten FTP master pw?

If you forget the master password, you will need to re-enter all the passwords and set a new master password. You need to delete the line starting with AESVerify from the file wcx_ftp.ini.

Or use menu Configuration - Change settings files directly. This will open wincmd.ini and wcx_ftp.ini.
