Feature Request: combine files in background

Post by *bydvh »

Maybe it is possible to do the combining process in de backgroup just as it is possible with copy, move en ftp.

In newsgroups there are many parts that have to be combined to one large file (as with dvd's images). And now I have to wait until it is ready what can take up to 15 minutes.Often I like to do multiple combining but now I have to open multiple instances of TotalCMD. I don't think it should be to difficult to make or are there other reasons not do this?

Instead of using the combine feature of TC, you can always use the command line of TC.

imagine you have 2 parts/files on the left side to combine
click/select the first part/file
type in TC: copy /b <CTRL+ENTER> + <CURSOR DOWN> <CTRL+ENTER> destfilename.ext <ENTER>

using batch files you can do even more...

... and as a bonus: it's waaaay faster :-)
This is the only occasion, when I choose a windows command instead of TC...
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

I think this is a very good idea.

In addition if you were able to "queue" up (F2) the combine job into the Background Transfer Manager, that would be ace.. :D (Though I'm not entirely sure how that would be accomodated interface wise. Add all files it reckons it can combine to the list? Or just add the first file as a "Combine" job? The latter probably makes more sense, is safer and, I think, is easier to implement?)

On a similar note, the dialog that comes up asking you to specify a destination folder could also show a brief "preview" of the combine job, something like the number of files it will attempt to combine.

Cheers,
Svein.

Oops, yeah good point. Perhaps that is not such a good idea after all, although it would still be nice if it was done on local hard drives. Best not done on floppydisks, cd/dvd-roms and over the network though.
