TC9 beta: "auto-switch" feature; misses reason

Post by *Samuel »

Not exactly a bug. :D

Code: Select all

23.03.16 Added: GUI to auto-switch view modes by directory, type of directory, or files (32/64)
There should be another auto-switch-reason if a Quicksearch (ctrl+s) is initiated. Then the background-color of the panel could be adjusted.

My first thought regarding auto-switch settings was that there is no checks for plugin fields or search templates.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Quick search would be problematic - for example, you are currently in a directory with auto view mode = thumbnails. Then you start a quick search, and suddently it changes to full (details) view.

Plugin fields are not available because TC has to call these search templates for every single file in the directory each time you change directories. The performance would be horrible.

But my Quicksearch profile would not mess with view mode. Just adding a background color and an icon.

I would expect calling plugin fields at least for folder itself (to allow advanced folder matching for custom views).

I could allow fields in the "folder" part of the rule only, would that help?

I would really appreciate to add Quicksearch as reason. This would solve the old "it is very easy to overlook that the current pane is filtered"-problem.

I think that will be useful too.
Also I agree with Samuel that a rule for enabled quick filter (like the one for search results) will be useful too.

There is another problem: Auto-switch is only checked each time you change to a different directory, not every time something changes within a directory. This also applies to changes like saving a file - for example, if you have filter "at least one *.jpg" file, the filter is only applied when going to the directory, not when saving a jpg file to an empty directory.

For quick search filter, TC would have to apply all filters also when you start searching, which could have other side effects like the above (e.g. user has defined quick search & at least one jpg).

I would be totally fine if the quick search filter would be an exclusive filter only triggered alone. (without the ability to add other dependencies - with "and" or "or")

Unfortunately the user can still edit the wincmd.ini manually...

Instead of creating a whole new auto-switch rule what about adjusting the current background color(s) a bit when quicksearching / filtering? The colors could be made a bit darker/lighter automatically depending on the current color.

What do you think?
