[TC9b4] Context menus hotkeys display - REVIVED

Post by *petermad »

This subject http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=312489#312489 has been moved to "TC Fixed bugs".

I want to revive the subject with this extra argument:

Another drawback of reusing strings 5282, 5283, 5284 and 5299 for the contest menu is that there can be hotkeys attached to those strings, and those hotkeys are displayed but inactive/inappropiate/replicated in the contect menu.

See: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/underlinecontext.png

So please provide a new string xxxx="Ctrl;Alt;Shift;Win" that can be used for this purpose (and many others in the future) and can be properly translated.

As translator of TC I and many others are using a lot of time trying to do a good job, so it is very FRUSTATING to me, and probably to others, not to be able to do so, and for example in this case have to change strings that has worked for years, by having to change the translation to fit new situations and to remove fully functional hotkeys (in the original context) from the strings!!

I don't think 25-35 extra bytes in the language files will make any difference.

I agree that reusing strings in translations may be problematic. As far as I remember, there were similar problems in Polish translation for TC 8.52. The problem was that one string from the language file was in two UI places. Although this was OK for English, it was very problematic for Polish translation.

Excactly - and for example Polish, Russian and Spanish are some of the languages, where there are hotkeys in these strings.

Hotkeys get removed from these strings when used in the menu (TC removes all the & signs), so there is no problem.

Well, they are still visible (even not active) as you can see form the screenshot in the first posting!

It's not only a problem with hotkeys, but also with the context, in which the string exist.

For example, depending on the group box header or dialog box title, two strings may have identical translation in English or German, but different in Polish and many other languages. For example, English has no declension for nouns, but Polish has seven.

So definitely, please don't reuse strings, since it causes many troubles for translators...

Sorry, I will definitely not make these separate strings. The context is exactly the same (modifiers for hotkeys). But I'm removing the & signs now.

Confirmed that the underscores are now removed from the context menu in TC9b5 Smile

I would still have preferred new strings for this though, so I didnt have to change string 5282.
