Network Neighborhood not showing custom directories

Post by *Dalai »

I guess, we'll never run out of bugs ;). This one's new in TC9 beta4.

Set NetHoodStyle=2 in wincmd.ini, start TC and open Network Neighborhood. TC won't show any custom directories from user's Network neighboorhood directory. Difficult to explain when you don't know the correct terms, but I'll try. The directory I'm refering to is in %UserProfile%\Netzwerkumgebung on a German Windows XP. This includes a directory named "Computers Near Me" ("Benachbarte Computer" in German), and all directories the user added by opening/saving files from/to UNC paths.

The directories show fine when NetHoodStyle is set to something different from 2. They also show fine in beta2.

I prefer to keep it completely empty with NetHoodStyle=2 except for the single network subitem.

Well, then we disagree on this one. TC has always shown these items in previous versions, and Explorer does this as well - without showing the computers in the LAN like you get with NetHoodStyle = 1 (or 0). It's quite annoying to have to go a longer way to reach a computer or share in the same workgroup because even this item isn't there like it used to be.

Also it somehow contradicts the help file which states that NetHoodStyle=2 is XP like. No, it's not anymore because Explorer shows these directories, but TC does not.

Sorry, I don't remember what NetHoodStyle=2 did on XP in earlier versions. Why use it at all when it should show the same as NetHoodStyle=1?

Although NetHoodStyle=1 is the same as NetHoodStyle=2 on XP and earlier, I find it irritating to change the behavior now. Btw, I even miss these folders on Win7 and later.

Also I want to be able to use NetHoodStyle=2 in a portable TC because I don't want to see the workgroup's contents directly in Network neighborhood. With the current implementation of beta4 I'd need to set NetHoodStyle=1 on XP but NetHoodStyle=2 on Win7 which is annoying, especially in a portable TC, but also in TC installations.

Mind the difference: I want to see the shares I visited previously (by using open/save dialog in other programs), but I don't want to see all the computers of the same workgroup in Network neighborhood. Here's a screenshot of what I'd like to see, even with NetHoodStyle=2, and here is what Explorer shows.

And how can one add such directories to Net...? I only see slowly appearing computers there in Win7.

These directories are not shown in TC on Vista and later.

On XP and earlier, you can add these by opening a file from a UNC path or saving a file there, from any program (e.g. Notepad). Explorer will automatically create a folder with a name containing the computer and share name in "%UserProfile%\Network neighborhood" directory containing a target.lnk file pointing to that share.

On Win7 you'd need to manually add a Network address (or network place, don't know the correct term) by right-clicking in Explorer's "Computer". But, as I said, TC won't show them, only Explorer does.

I've added some network folder using Computer context menu item, and I see it in both Explorer and TC just in Computer virtual folder, and of course both do not show it in Network.

Anyway, I think this option should't change anything on Windows XP because it is there to make later Windowses behave like XP...

Ah, there they are on Win7. Good to know. Let's see if I can keep that in mind once I switch to Win7 (probably later this year) ...

Yes, this adds to it.
