Files - Split dialog: the long file names do not fit window

Post by *mwz »

Split dialog: the long file names do not fit window (Windows 7 x64 RUS, TC9-beta6 x64).

Unlike many other dialogs (say, Copy), where the long names are truncated to the reasonable length, and even the "Combine" dialog, where these names are truncated simply by the width of the window.

Confirmed.

Either the Split dialog needs to be able to expand in height to show all of the long file name over several lines or it has to truncate the file name.

The Combine does better because it has more vertical space over the input field, but also here the filename should be truncated in stead of just cut.

Yep, that's only one of the dialogs that need an overhaul.

Please try with beta 7! I changed the split and encode dialogs to support multiple lines. However, when the name is too long without any spaces, it will not be broken into multiple lines, and the dialog will not be expanded sideways.

It is better now, and at least works the same way for split and combine - but the best would be a function that splits the name to show the start and teh end with ... somewhere in the middle where characters are cut out.

Support+++. Very good idea!
It's impossible to lead us astray for we don't care even to choose the way.

Then probably the same in the Copy, Move and many others dialogs, I think...

Sure - that would be nice.

But it is probably not that easy because it has to take font type, font size, DPI setting etc. into consideration.

Yes, that's why it's better to use a non-editable (read-only) editbox for such cases. Its width is limited but the user can "scroll" in there and even copy the contents (or parts of it). That would also eliminate the reason to shorten any paths or replace parts of it with ellipses. Technically, labels should only be used for static texts.
