other file manager software
please dont flame me as i love total commander
but i was wondering if there is any other file manager that i can use that i can assign buttons to on the button bar to certain directories. the thing is, i want there to be one for each panel, right and left, so that i dont have to focus beforehand.. ? (i dislike the directory menu for the same reason), also it would be nice to have a button bar where you can assign text to them instead of icons..
the extra click is getting to me..
i dont use the internet features of TC, just file management, pack/unpacking, associations.. simple.. i tried frigate and explore2000 and another one or two but they all suck compared to TC so far..
im prolly asking for too much..
any suggestions?

You know about the commandline options '/N /L=%desired Path% /R=%desired other Path%'qda wrote:please dont flame me as i love total commander

2nd EDIT: those are just parameters for starting TC, not for use with the button bar, right?

EDIT: i tried putting /R=%D:\% into the command of a button (also with " because thats what the help file says), but it gave me a 'file not found' error.. what am i doing wrong (sorry for being such a newb)

no, i asked a while ago, and people said you couldnt focus and then switch dirs in the button bar! lol
ok, i'll give that a try
but now theres still the issue of icons, instead of text for it for my own buttons (cause id use it to replace the directory bookmarks menu)

Yes, but you shouldn't see a differencethose are just parameters for starting TC, not for use with the button bar, right?

To see it in a new TC instance use :
%COMMANDER_PATH%\Totalcmd.exe /N /L=<desired Path> /R=<desired other Path>
To see it in the same TC instance use :
%COMMANDER_PATH%\Totalcmd.exe /O /L=<desired Path> /R=<desired other Path>
Just change the <path entries> to your needs.
The %COMMANDER_PATH% is a environment variable, so let it unchanged !

In your button you have to insert:qda wrote:_____________________________________________________

Command: c:\totalcmd\totalcmd.exe /N /L=d:\ /R="e:\programm files"
when your TC is in c:\Totalcmd. Instead 'c:\totalcmd\totalcmd.exe' you can use %Commander_path%\totalcmd.exe - as %Commander_path% is a variable that contains the full path to your TC-directory. In my posting I used the '%' only to indicate that you must insert your desired path. Sorry if I was misleading you.
And as sqa_wizard mentioned you can force your current TC-instance to change the paths (with button) if you replace the '/N' with '/O'.
What for do you need the Text?`Just to better distinguish the different buttons? Then I recommend the following:but now theres still the issue of icons, instead of text for it for my own buttons (cause id use it to replace the directory bookmarks menu)
Configuration->Display-> Help texts = check the 'show help texts for buttons (tooltips)'
Then each button shows a tooltip either with the text from line 'tooltip' of the button or in case it's empty from 'Command'.
If you want to see the tooltip immedately you have to open wincmd.ini and find (or if not exist create) 'ToolTipDelay='. The default is 500 and is the delay in milliseconds. You can set the value to 0.
After these settings you'll have to restart TC to make the changes effect.
Is it this what you wanted?

As I wrote: Just curiousqda wrote: lol, i suppose i have everything i need in TC, but why do you ask

I think you can do most things you need with TC ( though I know that there are many things still to improve). And if you think you can't it's worth to ask here for a solution.

You can't replace the buttons by text, but you can use an icon design program and create your own buttons which could show just text. I don't think it would be very pretty, but it's possible.
Also, did you know that you can edit the menu? You could create your own menu entries to perform those commands.
