On one machine I checked for new updates based on TC9 RC6 (x64). I got the following unexpected message. At that time the expected version was most probably TC9.0a RC1 (x64)

Yes, RC6 didn't know the special codes for version a RC1, RC2 etc. yet! They were added in TC 9.0 final.
