The good soup is made in old pots !
That sounds logical to me, the best pea soup is made by my mom who is running towards 80 and uses even older pots I think. :D

Simply activate the "Use screen reader compatible menus" option in "Settings - View".

@Clo: SC is only available in English and German. If you want to extract the self-extracting archive first, please download UnSqueez from our homepage. SC is slightly larger than TC but it contains some more modules.

Thx, the problem is, blinds wouldn't find that option so it should be activated by default... ;)

You really should think about placing that option where you can set the SC design (Office 2003, etc...) and to label it with something less cryptic than "screen reader compatible". Call it "old style menus" for example. What exactly do I lose when activating that option?

Another problem: all buttons have the same background, a magnifier on a sheet! I am not able to distinguish them.
I bet that SC depends on some service. Well, whatever it is, it is not activated here for some reason.

I guess you have a TNT2 graphics card with the latest nVidia driver installed. It seems that drivers above 45.23 have some issues if they are used on older graphic cards.

You lose the ability to customize the menus.

I'm sorry, is that forum devoted to TCMD support and not SC ? Or am I mistaken?

Read the topic title first, if it's not your interest go and eat some fish. Ghisler allows discussing 3rd-party products and this is a discussion about one of those.

@Sven:
Yep, TNT2 driver version 53.03 but I am not aware of any visual problems like that in any other app so uninstalling is not an option unfortunately.
You lose the ability to customize the menus.
That's what I have read in tool tip, too, now I only have to find out how to customize the menus.

Soccer first. ;)

Give it a try. Some of our users had the same problem, downgrading to 45.23 solved it. Or you are afraid, that you can't play Doom 3 anymore? ;)

Sorry, the customization of the standard menu is not possible.

I love TC, don't get me wrong. A friend of mine converted me to it from DirectoryOpus (which I still think is excellent). But I had to admit that SpeedCommander is quite impressive. I've only been messing around with it for maybe 10 minutes (and quite a few of those minutes were trying to make it as TC-like as possible) but so far so good. I'll keep it around and try to use it as my primary file manager for awhile.

Luckily, all of my machines are quite modern so it runs like a champ for me.

Great work.

Discussions, not technical support of some product.
If that's so, let's bring technical issues of all software ever written here.
I have nothing against about discussions regarding SC or any other product. You just went too deep into that discussion IMO.

Also I do believe I did nothing to insult you. Apology would be a good thing.

It's one thread. There's no need to be extreme and suggest that we "bring technical issues of all software ever written here." That's completely silly. If this discussion of SpeedCommander somehow annoys you or offends you, simply stop reading it. There are other threads here that you may find more interesting and particularly relevant to Total Commander.

Other people are enjoying this thread. Let them do so.

@Sven:
Uninstalled driver -> menus worked.
Upgraded to latest NVidia 56.72, menus still work, no need to downgrade!
Now I can play Doom3 and still enjoy your beautiful icons. ;)

I have found the option to customize the menus as well now.

One problem left:
Auf dem Datenträger befindet sich kein erkanntes Dateisystem.
This is because one of my partitions is encrypted with DCPP, any chance to disable that warning?

@piranha:

How do you discuss in a topic named "Anyone tried SpeedCommander?" without mentioning pros and cons, features and errors? I bet such a "discussion" with "yes" and "nos" would be very interesting for all of us...
If that's so, let's bring technical issues of all software ever written here.

I see, and you are the man to decide if a discussion has turned into a support thread? Sorry, just don't read it, what are you doing on page 2 in a thread like that?
Also I do believe I did nothing to insult you. Apology would be a good thing.
Sorry for abusing your nick to give a sarcastic answer to your rhetoric question. Do you feel better now? I hope so.

Hi Sven

In my notes I found a specific slowdown example for you:

Set up the left panel with a tree and a thumbnail view. Display a large (>10Mb) jpg by selecting one of the thumbnails and clicking the QuickView toolbar button. Now switch away from SC and do something else with your computer for a while, preferably something memory intensive.

When I switch back, it takes between 5 and 10 seconds for SC to refresh. This is repeatable. Perhaps SC is rereading the thumbnails and QV image before doing a screen refresh. All file managers that have thumbnail mode should cache the thumbnails. Maybe they should cache the qv images too. Perhaps SC is invalidating a control and then additionally the refresh sequence is inefficient.

If I check Task Manager while switched away from SC, I find it is consuming 2% of processor, just sitting there in the Task Bar doing nothing...

I'm running XP Pro with 1GB RAM and Intel 2.8C hyperthreading enabled.

That's all in the TC forum about SC from me, though.

I do not speak or write German. However, if you would set up an English language forum for SC, I would participate and help with determining the sources of the slowdowns and other annoyances that prevented me from purchasing SC...
