If there is a chance of Temporary Panel to be implemented?

Post by *Valery_Kondakoff »

Hi!

There is my question: what are TC developers plans about implementing some kind of 'Temporary Panel' (container that can hold a content of multiple folders in a single pane)?

There are several file managers with such a panel implemented: FAR, Xplorer2 etc...

Several available TC plugins, that are trying to reproduce Temporary Panel behavior are almost unusable (TempPanel, TempDrive, LinkDrive). If there is a chance to see native Temporary Panel in TC?

Thank you!

:) Hello, welcome on board !
If there is a chance to see native Temporary Panel in TC?
:!:  "Hot subject" !
• I guess this is planned for the major next version.
* I've a look in the theads, and will edit that post if I find where this has been told

EDIT :
:oops: Sorry, I found only the German thread {Not any Stefan or Jeff around ?}
* Ch. Ghisler said somewhere " ...I will consider this..." or so, but I can't remember where :(

  Kind regards,

Really?!!! Didn’t know that!

I hope this is not just based on "...I will consider this..." ;)

The mentioned thread is not about a virtual panel implementation. However here is an english thread about virtual file lists: http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=1323

:) Hi Panos !
I hope this is not just based on "...I will consider this..."
• Not only. But I can't neither remember nor find where I have read something more affirmative ( :( growing old is bad…)

Variants---

:) Thanks for the link !
• There is a lot of possible variants around any extra-window… - Valery_Kondakoff asks for a "dir-container", but isn't the only way, I guess…
• In anyway, this is an interesting addition; hoping that Ch. Ghisler'll bring some points of clarification about which he wants / can / to add.

Thanks to all of you for your interest to this topic!

I was talking not about a dir-cotainer, but rather about a path-container: so it can contain paths to the files and folders.

A quick example: I'm opening "Temporary Panel', copy some files and folders to this panel (the files are not physically copied, only paths to these files and folders). Then I can manipulate with all the files added to Temp Panel, as if they were located in one folder.

There is a screenshot of Temporary Panel from FAR file manager with some files ands folders added: http://www.nncron.ru/temp/tp.png

Of course it will be very useful if we have an option to 'send' files to Temp Panel right from the Search dialog. The FAR file manager has this functionality (take a look at the another screenshot http://www.nncron.ru/temp/tp1.png and note the 'Panel' button: this button is used to send the result of a search to the Temporary Panel.

I think we could try to ask Mr. Ghisler if he is still interested in implementation of smth like this...

You mean something like Ctrl+B view or Search - feed to listbox? I could add an option to copy files to such a panel (by just adding their names to the list), would this help? Deletion would, however, really delete the files (they could be removed via "show only selected"). What do you think?

It sounds very promising. So you could easily rename different folders with MUT. Or manipulate them in other ways.

It would be a nice feature.

(once I tried to use the Temp dirves in this way and had to discover disappointed, that I only manipulate the links but not the files).

I also think this would be a fantastic idea. Deleting the files should delete the files but there should be an option to remove the files from the panel. Something like "Clear selected files in panel" and "Clear all files in panel." Multiple panels would also be nice.

Yes, exactly. We need an option to add file and dir names to such a panel. Randy says the rest: we need a special action remove file from panel. All other actions (copy, move, edit, delete) will work with the physical file (not with his name in the list).

BTW: I'm ready for some beta-testing if you need this!

Thank you for your attention!

@ghisler:
Just implement the temporary panels as a subpart of your tab system.

1. open new temporary tab with ctrl-g for example
2. tabs (panels) can be filled with virtual links to files by F5 or drag&drop
3. A simple Del or F8 MUSTN'T delete the original files, expected behaviour is remove virtual links from panel!
4. Shift-Del or Shift-F8 can delete original files, though, would be very intuitive.

The problem with this is the non-intuitive behaviour.

Usually people mark the files they wanna delete and press del.
Here they would have to mark the the files they wanna keep and press cm_ShowOnlySelected.

Imagine you have 1000 temporary links and wanna remove just one:
Mark the file you wanna delete, invert selection, press cm_ShowOnlySelected? Kind of confusing probably...

Well, if you can only implement it that way or it's easier for you in the current situation, just do it. It's better than no temporary panel at all of course but it somehow sounds just like a workaround. ;)

Or maybe you can implement a function cm_RemoveOnlySelected in contrary to cm_ShowOnlySelected? This would change my point of view I think but I would still prefer the "del" solution.

An important thing for me when using virtual tab is the ability to create virtual folders (not that kind of virtual folders Microsoft is talking of). What I mean is a folder which not exists physically when created in the virtual tab, but which will be automatically created in the target dir when copying from the virtual tab to a physical existing dir. What do you mean?
