Feature request: Change window title dynamically

Post by *Kristian Kjær »

Feature request:
I'd like it if each TC window title would contain the names of the directories open in that TC instance.
E.g., "Total Commander: C:\documents - d:\temp ..."
The reason:
I like to have many windows open and to move between them with alt(tab).
Most other windows I can recognize by their titles, even if they are multiple instances of the same program, but not TC windows.

I guess you use WinXP. If so and

If you have not too many path:
You can create some users with appropiate names e.g. C_doc; D_temp and run TC with comand runas - then the username is displayed in TC-Title bar.

BTW you need a password set for users to use 'runas'.

Does anybody know the conlusion of this old thread?
IIRC Christian said something in the direction of "that would make the title too long => it wouldn't be visible on the taskbar buttons anyways".

Then how about TC truncating as required:
"Total Commander 6.03: - <licensee> - C:\My Documents\letters\...\June2004 & d:\temp\backups\...\backupsJune2004"
That should fit in most title bars, and if it were further truncated by windows, it would still contain a part of the useful information.

I understand the concept, but currently on the button I have in Taskbar I can see "Total Commander 6.03a -..." - that means not even the "NOT REGISTERED" / "Licensee name" message, let alone the dir names. What sense would it make to show them?

TIA

If you hover the mouse over the taskbar button then you'll probably see the full window title as a 'tip'.

I prefer to navigate with the keyboard, using alt(tab) to change focus.
Then as I hold down ALT and repeat pressing TAB I see the icons of all windows and the title of the one I'll be in if I let go of ALT.
This tabbing window can be configured to be large, if desired, so that there is room for a long title.

Also in the task manager you see a list of all the windows with their names, and you can switch focus to one with a name you like.

OK, this way it makes sense, thanks for explaining.

You can either use Powertoys TweakUI under General->Alt+Tab:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

or you can directly modify registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, entries "CoolSwitchColumns" and "CoolSwitchRows".

After manual registry change you have to log off and back to see the changes.

Maybe the "Alt-Tab Replacement" from the Powertoys is something for you, too.

how about:
"Total Commander 6.03: - <licensee> - left tab title & right tab title"
