Help! Another Synchronize Dirs lecture needed...

Post by *ford prefect »

Hello fellaz,

First of all YES, I was searching through the forum before I posted this (hopefully I wasn't blind), so here it goes:
I was fixin' Me another of doze webpage updatez when I realized I still couldn't figure these:

1.In synchronize directories dialog I fail to find a function which would copy the current selection of files spread through many dirs and subdirs to clipboard.
(Yes. I'm willing to save the file update/version history this sporty way)
BTW the print function is nice but... print to file?

2.The verysame synchronize dirs dialog offers a compare by content function but this seems not to work on multiple filez i.e. like multiple-file-selection Lister style viewing "n" and "p" keys,
Or I again couldn't find how to get such functionality (Seems weird but I can't be satisfied by the "1st select then compare single files" functionality) :(

Maybe I should go and get some decent "beyond compare" sofware... naaah too lazy :D ;)

Thankz a zilion for any advice

@1.

print to file is easy:

Add Printer, "Generic" "Text" (depends on Windows version), device file

a dialog will pop up and ask for the file name when printing

After giving it "some" thought in case of my second problem I would probably also have to demand a "Next 2 files" and "Previous 2 files" in the standart "compare by content" which is as I assume no-go with the current version of TC :(

well and the print to file is a nice thing, now I finaly overcomed my lazyness and set it up (BTW thanks batchman61 for the tip)
but this has a "tiny" issue with the synchronyze dirs selection output as I see it!!!
To describe it more vividly: when printing a simple file list to file via the "Generic /Text only" printer (who would ever dare to try using such a "shortcut") everything is ok. But ...ever tried to do something like this:

1.Set up a handy "Generic / Text only" text-to-file printer (see settings provided by batchman61, it differs across M$OS but is no problem to setup)
2.In the synchronyze dirs choose for example unequal files to be displayed
3.Synchronyze some similar but not equal file structures
4.Select ALL the non-equals (or at least two)
5.Let the fiest begin by choosing from the right click menu "Print selected..." and printing to the "Generic / Text only" printer

a mayhamem text file is created where even nonunicode-filenames are spread across multimple lines and tab characters declared war on each other :)

Might be a problem of this Windows file printer but then again, it has no problem printing the filelist in a normal manner...

I should be more carefull

...as I later noticed in both cases (print filelist and selection form synchronize dirs) the file is disorted and uneditable in Notepad or UltraEdit for example...
The output text file probably uses DOS text format with some missing and different formating bytes (like EOF etc.)

Nevertheless the text file printed from File list is at least nicely and clean viewable in Lister while the "printed" selection from synchronize dirs is doomed! Not even humanly viewable in Lister like in the previous case.

And I'm not willing to use another tool to convert such a printed junk (some DOS formated text, maybe) when UltraEdit didn't manage to do so.

So I'm stuck here...
