Unknown problem (?)

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello all !
¤ Below, a strange problem from the French Forum. The original thread is located HERE

 (user Crisis).
«Under Windows XP-Pro :
• whether I change the drive letter of some drives from Admin Tools … Drives Management, TC displays both the old and the new letter, while in <My Computer>, all is normal.

•  In example : if I turn off my USB2 hard-disk rack, then I turn on it again, the (old) drive letter exists still, though it's unusable, and TC creates a new letter.

* A while later, I've too much drives…
*Am I the one who could observe that phenomenon ?
Crisis»

 (Me) I don't own such hardwares, sorry I can't test. But I send a note to the Author … blah blah

 (Ch. Ghisler via e-mail) «Sorry, I don't know this problem and can't reproduce it…»

:| If someone should know that issue and an eventual solution, I would translate for this user on the French forum, thanks !

 Kind regards,
Claude

Since I have no USB hard disk or stick, too, I still have a question:

Why does Windows create a new drive letter? If the USB-Disk is removed the former used driveletter should be available. And if you only 'remount' the drive Windows should use the next available drive letter (i.e. the former used).

When I change the drive letter of my CD-Rom while it is in use (either I opened a folder in TC or in Explorer) there is a message from Windows that the drive letter is in use and that I can still use the old letter as well as the new one until rebooting.
But then TC and Explorer display the drive under both drive letters.

:) Hello Stefan !

* Another French user posted just now : he saw this issue sometimes, but it's solved by a reboot… He has Win 2K, a bit different than XP-Pro.
;) Wait & see (not any Jeff around ?)

I use USB-disk, but it's USB 1.1, not USB 2. And I have absolutely no problems with it. When I connect it I have new drive with new letter (the first unused letter beginning from C: ), when I disconnect it the new drive disappears both in Explorer and in TC, the drive letter is free now. Once I have even connected two USB-devices - one is my USB 1.1, and the second is USB 2.0, all worked correctly. So, I don't know what the reason of the problem the problem can be...

PS: I use WinXP & Win2k, TC 6.03a.

Hi Claude,

Just a thought: You can hide drives in explorer like the 'allowed' feature in TC (e.g. using M$ Powertoys for XP)

. I'm pretty sure TC shows only drives that Windows allocates. So if TC shows a drive letter windows also access the same drive with this letter.

And as I mentioned above: It's strange that XP should allocate another driveletter if you only disconect and reconnect a drive.

He should try to remove the drive before he turns it off. There's an icon in the tray and he should left click it once and select "Safely remove drive". Windows shows the "It is now safe to remove the drive" message and he then turns it off. Once he turns it on again there will be just one drive.

Also he can double-click on the icon and a window opens. There he can select the drive and the properties for the drive. In the other properties window he can then select wether to optimize the drive for quick removal of for performance.
