Cursor Position when returning to parent folder

Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
When I have to go through a folder containing a lot of sub-folders it really annoys me that every time I return to parent folder the cursor is positioned on the fourth row (counting from bottom), when it would be great thing if it can position itself in the middle.
Is there any way around this?

The cursor position should be on the fourth row from the top because your focus was most likely on the first few items you just saw in the subfolder.
Afaik there's no option for this. Move to Suggestions?
It's surprising how many little details one ignores or tolerates until someone brings it up

There are a few similar suggestions already, like Scroll position in dirlist or Change number of lines below the cursor at screen bottom. But I don't think anything has changed since then. I would prefer if the scrollbar restored its position to the state before entering a subfolder. But as it's mentioned in one of the linked threads, it's not that simple to implement.

Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
Was this ever fixed? I just noticed this annoying "feature" when going thru dir with lots of subfolders.
Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
I the current beta the cursor is always positioned on the sub-dir entry in the parent dir
after I come back to the parent dir.
This is for me the only logical way regardless of the screen related position.

Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
This is not the problem dekiblue is adressing - the problem is that the foldername in directories that has more folders than can fit in the file panel is shown as the 4th last.I the current beta the cursor is always positioned on the sub-dir entry in the parent dir
after I come back to the parent dir.
Try it with for example the c:\windows\system32 directory - scroll down so that for example the folder GroupPolicy is in the top of the file panel, and enter the folder. then exit the folder again. The cursor is now on GroupPolicy (as expected), but the folder is displayed at the 4th last folder (not so expected).

Are you perhaps using Brief view? In Brief view I can confirm your observation, but in Full view it is different. The GroupPolicy folder returned at the top of the file list, selected, as expected, using either Alt+LArrow or the Back button, on both the right and left panes.

Hmm, just to make sure we are looking at the same, I have made a video of the behaviour - this is with a completely fresh ini file:

TC 9.5b9 under Windows 10 1909.

Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
What resolution you are using? If you use high res with many lines visible, the problem may no occur. Try with smaller TC window size. In my system the problem happens just like Peter's video shows.alphonse68 wrote: ↑2019-12-17, 05:53 UTC No, I use normal view as it installs... Full view, as I just found out. I don't have any bells or whistles installed and I don't use Dark Mode, nor View Mode, nor Custom Columns... I keep TC clean for it suits my needs as it was conceived... daily use, first app to open, last one to close.

Notice that I wrote:
This is tested with a clean ini file - hence with the default window size.
Notice that I wrote:
BTW - it is not always that the folder is put as the 4th last. If I for example in c:\windows\system32 scroll the [drivers] directory up in the top of the file panel, go into the folder and out again, then the [drivers] directory is placed in the middle of the file panel.in directories that has more folders than can fit in the file panel

Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
Please post a message to the TC9.5x bug reports forum and add a link to your video (and this thread) there.
Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
I can confirm that going back to parent dir with Alt+leftArrow preserves the position of the parent dir.
But going back with Double click on [..], with Enter on [..]. with BackSpace or with Ctrl+PgUp all scrolls the directory down.
Using cd .. on the command line also moves the directory down, whereas cd .. in a button moves to the top ( [..] ) of the parent dir.
Pressing Alt+downArrow and then chosing the previous directory behaves like pressing Alt+arrowLeft (as expected)
So 5 out of 8 ways of going up-dir moves the directory down in the example I described earlier.

Re: Cursor Position when returning to parent folder
You actually wrote earlier:I'm sorry if I missed that detail earlier, and since I probably never use that method to exit a directory, I didn't think to test it as well.
And since I mostly use the BackSpace button, that is what I referred to when testing. In the video I double clicked, since that can be seen. The GroupPolicy folder returned at the top of the file list, selected, as expected, using either Alt+LArrow or the Back button
