:) Hello !

• The Swiss laws forbid the export of any encryption product, hence the original ZIP DLL of TC doesn't support any password...
* However, you can get the equivalent DLL supporting password from the Addons page of TC-Site, or else, from here.
* Then, you'll have just to rename the ZIP >>> EXE (no guarantee, I didn't experienced that, but it should work...)

I guess you are referring to the file attributes encrypted and compressed. It's not supported by the operating system. Take a look at EncryptFile.

Thanks Clo & Lefteous for your time.

I'm afraid this not work. I tried to rename the compressed and encrypted file.zip to file.exe and results the file is not capable to unzip. (It give me and
error type " Bad uncompressing" )

Thanks a lot

• I just tested this advised handling at home, that works like a charm !
* BUT I don't use the standard SFX-Header <sfxhead.sfx>
- I guess it doesn't support the passwords !
* Hence, I use an alternative file instead, wrote by the TC-user Fabiochelly. There is one available from the same link than above, but it's in French (the dialog-box)...
* It exists in English too, available from HERE - Both versions are in that ZIP.
Note : I tested under Win 98SE Fr. only…
I hope that'll work at your's too.

Have you tried :

Cryptonite
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/cryptonite.html
Or better go to http://clubtotal.free.fr/ and look under WCX, they have a more recent version.

Kryptel (Shareware)
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/kryptel.html

?

Thanks to all :)

To Clo :

Yes, the problem was the < sfxhead.sfx > file.
My O.S. is Win98SE sp and with this changes the uncompression works. :D

Hi,
Thanks, I was searching for a password packer, and your solution works in my TC too. But it seems that you can look into the .ZIP (see the filenames) without using the password. Only if you want to unzip it asks for a password. Is it possible to make looking into the .ZIP password protected?
Thanks.

•With TC and that DLL, no. We can always look at the file-names currently.
This has been discussed recently, please have a look at that thread.

Password protected files

Post by *Sugit »

Hi Claude,
Thanks for your welcome, I'm an enthousiastic TC user since somewhere '89. (Or was that Norton Commander still?).

So for my wish to make pw-protected files that cannot be used into: I think of using this aes-plugin.
Do you know if this is safe in the sense: will it remain technically available for some time?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

:) Hello !

¤ Personally, I don't use AES-plugin because I don't need it. But that I heard about it sounds good.
There is no big risk to install it; normally, the updates are announced in the "Plugin forum". No more suggestion at the moment, since I don't use a lot such encrypted archives… :|

As workaround: make a zip in the zip - also encrypted.

So you can switch inside the outer zip to see the inner one but if you try to look inside the inner one you have to give the password.

There is no risk that this plugin disappears: If you save the installer version you could be pretty sure that you can use the plugin with TC Version 12.0 ;) .The plugins interface would not alter, so you would could use all plugins in later versions.

As you perhaps know: The plugins are one strenght of TC.

By the way: The AES plugin creates real encrypted files. If you use zip with password it's not really encrypted. If someone really intends to look inside such a zip he will see what is inside. The most easy way is to use a prog to make a 'brute force'-decryption, i.e. try a big amount of passwords to unzip the file. But I'm pretty sure there are tools to look inside the zip without knowing the password.

sheepdog

So if you have to use encryption the AES Plugin is a good choice.

Hi !
I have intalled the "cryptonite" pluggin, seems to be working fine
Just a thing... as soon as a wrong password was entered the archive is "corrupted" until we restart Total Commander... any way to let us try 3 times or so without needing to restart TC ?

A point disturbing me... how can we be sure the resulting file is really secure ? I mean this is not an "open source" (right ?) pluggin so no way that someone check what they do, we have to trust those people... (okay same remark for all those kind of pluggins not that one in particular) what do you think about ?
