No preview of pdf in lister
Hi,
the preview of pdf-files ("F3" and then "8") is not working on my computer, I'm only getting a message that a preview is not available. When I use the windows explorer the preview of pdf-files is working without any problems.
My system:
Windows 10 Pro 1909
PDF-XChange Editor Plus, Version 8.0, build 334.0
Total Commander 9.50 64bit
Regards
Micha

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
Confirmed for "F3" and then "8".
I don't need it as I use the lister plugin SLister with SumatraPDF for preview
but Windows Explorer and Everything are able to preview PDFs.
So TC makes something different ?
I also have PDF-XChange Editor Version 8.0 installed for editing PDFs.

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
Confirmed with PDF-XChange Editor Plus 8.0.336.0 (latest version) and TC 9.50 final (fresh/clean install), both 64-bit
Error message
"Vorschau nicht verfügbar:"
"Angefordertet Vorgang kann nicht ausgeführt werden."
(message probably generated by Windows - I've configured TC + PDF-XChange in English for test purposes...)

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
I have testet with both "Adobe Acrobat Acrobat Reader DC" and "Windows Edge" associated with pdf files. If I press F3 - 8 in TC I just get a binary view of the file - and I get no error message.
When I press F3 HTMLView plugin is opened and uses Adobe Acrobat to show the file.
With a clean wincmd.ini file (hence no plugins) F3 - 8 has no effect - still uses binary view.

AFAIK Explorer view uses registered shell extension rather than program directly associated with file extension.

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
The same here ....
I get: "Preview isn't available:
Unable to perform requested operation."
Windows 7 x64 SP1
PDF-XChange PRO, Version 8.0, build 336.0
Total Commander 9.50 64bit

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
Very likely - but the bottom line is that if I try to use Explorer Preview (8) on a .pdf file I get Binary (2) view - no error message - on any of my compoters
PS I don't have PDF-XChange PRO - I have Adobe Acrobat on one my Windows 10 machine and Foxit PhantomPDF on my windows 7 machine.
So apparanly the error message others report: "Preview isn't available: Unable to perform requested operation." must come from PDF-XChange.

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
I have installed Acrobat Reader and can confirm that it doesn't work. I was able to make it work in the 64-bit version, though. The problem was a missing implementation of the IStream->Stat function, which is called by the Adobe Reader viewer.

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
I have installed SumatraPDF as default reader and shell extension. It works OK, and I'm pretty sure that Explorer view works with the shell extension - it runs SumatraPDF with predefined settings (white page background, gray window background, single page view, no toolbar, no bookmarks/table of content) which cannot be changed when viewing with F3 - 8. On the contrary, slister plugin calls SumatraPDF directly and all viewer features are available.
If Explorer view isn't available, Lister just displays automatic (binary in this case) view or whatever is set in Lister config, as @petermad has already mentioned.

I have picked up your recommendation and I'm using sLister.wlx64 v1.1.2 now (instead of pdfview.wlx v1.09).
I just had to replace the included (not executable) SumatraPDF.exe with the latest version (v3.1.2)
Works great! THANKS!

You're right. With PDF X-Change you can configure the Preview Handler (and other handlers) with XCShInfoSetup.exe *, installed in subfolder "Shell Extensions".
When activated, I'm getting the mentioned error, otherwise a (small+unresizeable) preview in lister (even with all handlers disabled in PDF-XC).
(strange: even when TC + PDF-XC is set to English I'm getting a german error message...)
I'm using the lister window rarely and also I don't need the Explorer preview there necessarily.
I prefer to view PDFs (and other files) inside of the TC main window via suitable plugin.
When required/useful, I'm starting the associated app with a double click.
However, it's "fascinating" for me that the preview via PDF-XC in Explorer + Everything is working without any problems...
I've spent some time for investigation and tests, but without any solution so far.

Re: No preview of pdf in lister
No, it's not strange at all. It's obvious for shell extension - (if possible) it uses the same language as the system itself.
