TC 9.51 and 9.01 x64
Fresh, clean INI file.
Windows 7 Pro x64
Well, this issue is somewhat of the cosmetic variety and does not affect TC's operation.
It also seems to be a regression of an issue already reported and fixed in the past: viewtopic.php?p=232129#p232129 .
(Or perhaps not; the original post i linked to does not reveal if the issue was observed and fixed for copy operations to a different drive, or only for copy operations where source and target were both on the same drive.)
When selecting and copying a number of files to a different drive, the selection of the files will be removed during the copy operation.
However, even after the copy operation finished, the status line below the file list window does not update to show zero selected files and still shows the number and total size of the originally selected files:

For the issue to occur, the files need to be copied to some directory on a different drive. Copying to a directory on the same drive as the original files will not trigger this bug.
EDIT: My original post stated that both x64 and x86 versions are affected. This is incorrect. Only x64 version exhibits the issue.
[SOLVED] After selecting and copying files from one drive to another, status line is not updated to zero selected files

Confirmed, but only for 64bit TC 9.51, not the 32bit version.
I can trace the bug all the way back to the first 64bit version: TC 8.0b1 from 2011!
I can confirm that it was fixed for copying files on the same drive in TC 8.0b7 - but apparantly never for copying between drives.

You are right. Only x64 bit version affected. I must have not paid attention when testing. My bad.
