[Off-Topic] How do you cope with WinXP SP2?

Post by *pdavit »

Prior to installing the new service pack for Windows XP I just wanted to hear your comments on the additions, improvements, corrections and mainly problems/bugs you are facing with SP2.

Thanks!

I read that Microsoft established a feature on the 'Windows Update' that you prevents to install it without disable automated Update.

So MS is aware of Problems with service pack 2. It is a good idea to make a disk image of your root partition before installing it, I think.

I've installed it 2 days ago (the Polish version of SP2 appeared only two days ago) on my two computers (at work and at home) and... everything seems to work correctly. Moreover, I had a problem with hibernation on my home computer lately and now it started to work ok, again. MovieMaker also used to crash very often, now it works properly. So I'm happy with it now.

MS firewall still works very strange but... of course I use another one. :-)

I've instaled mine (EN version) somewhere in August,
runs smoothly even with my ooooold 3DS Max 5,
no problems at all, I've got even DISABLED the automatic updates!
and the damn firewall of course.
Hibernating works well too and I've got a SATA RAID0 as a system drive
and RAID1 as storage.
Since I don't own many recent *software*(read "games") I can't tell if it is any bad in this direction, but it still runs my favorite application (looking passionatly on my copy of TC) without issues

For me the most pleasant was the addition of native WiFi support, because my WiFi card had a crappy SW to it...
Don't Panic! We have Total Commander...

Back to square one! We have two very contradictive experiences here! The quest goes on! :(

Well I've installed SP2 too, and no problems. OK it was a bit troublesome at first; I am in the habit of turning quite a lot of the default services off, and that did cause some trouble. Also seems that the SP2 update has reinstalled several of the otherwise disabled features and services I always disable on a new XP-install with 'XPAntiSpy'.

But no problems - had a good laugh over the Windows Firewall, and the 'Microsoft Security Center', and turned it off. I must say, I'm rather tired of having to turn off my firewall to get Windows Update working, but that's a minor detail. And the popup stopper isn't all that bad either - out of lazyness and habit I didn' have one previously, and it's an ok feature. Just silly that I can't make a rule allowing popups and activex content in local files, but I'll live. ;)

If you have MS Office installed I must recommend immediate update, as there's quite a security hole in the Word JPEG handler.
