Some of this issue has postings under the "network drives' zip extraction takes too long in WinXP-SP2" topic, but I wanted to start a new topic, since this is a general network copy problem.
At our office some of us has installed SP2 for WinXP, while others are still on SP 1.
SP2 computers:
In Total Commander (6.03a), it takes about 20 seconds to access a unmapped network drive.
The copy speed is also very slow, if there are folders with lots of small files. Big files is fast as ever, and it seems like it has something to do with the process done on each and every file copied.
The next thing I did feels to me like swearing in church. I started the Windows Explorer.
In this crap program the speed was still fast when I copied the folder with all the small files.
Also fast in Total Commander if using CTRL+C, CTRL+V as copy method, insted of F5.
Tried to sit on a computer with WinXP Sp1 and copy a folder from a computer with WinXP Sp2 (folder with lots of small files). Slow!!

Also the Sp2 computer access the unmapped network drive on the Sp1 computer fast.

It seems like Microsoft wants to remove all competitors from the market.
Have you tried to switch TC to compatibility mode for copying to these drives?

With compability mode and * in the drive field, it works great again. Still 20 sec's to access a unmapped network drive, but copy is very fast, so this is great news.
Before I tried the compability mode, I tried to disable autoprotect on Norton Antivirus. That also did the trick, but I could not find any settings in Antivirus options, that could help. Even tried excluding filetypes in the mentioned folder copied.
So, I turned on autoprotect in Norton Antivirus again and the compability mode in Total Commander, and it copies fast again.
Can you please explain a little more about this compability mode? What does it do? Has it any downsides? Is there a downside to use * in the drive field (for compability mode)?
Anyway, thanks for the help. For others looking for the compability mode setting in Total Commander:
Configuration -> Options -> Copy/Delete -> "use compability mode for the following drives"

The compability mode uses the copy function CopyFileEx provided by the operation system. The downside is that it doesn't work on Win9x systems. Can you please explain a little more about this compability mode? What does it do? Has it any downsides? Confirmed, but only the thirst time you trying to access that UNC path. And the same thing happened with SP1.

Don't know, have the same SP version on all machines over network.[/face]
