TC eating all the memory when copying big files

Post by *MichelPy »

Hi,
during my last years of usage of TC I was always amazed how quickly the whole memory of some of my PCs was consumed when copying files bigger than the free memory (bigger than 500MB or so).

the typical symptom was: the TC copy progress bar started first like a rocket, and later continued to progress very slowly. after checking in the task manager, I always found the "Available Physical Memory" between 3000 and 5000 KB. after pausing the TC copy, the available memory returned slowly to normal values (more than 100MB free). When starting the copy again the free memory went down again.

I tried many times to switch TC to "big file copy mode" (not using cache), but this didn't help.

:D I've found the culprit: The "LargeSystemCache" setting under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management is set to 1 on windows 2000 Servers. Setting this value to 0 gives me a normal TC behaviour (like under win2000pro and xp) !

Now I can copy big files with TC on my windows 2000 servers without eating all the memory !

Is it something known ? I hope it is not already in the FAQ... :?

Even if it is - Thanx to mention it. So if it comes to this question, someone (perhaps me) could remember the solution - without have read the whole FAQ.

:) Hello, bonsoir!
¤ Thank you, it's a very interesting info...
- I don't think that we have something about 2000Server in the FAQ for that problem.
